5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great for snorkeling

I was very pleased with this camera housing. I used it with the Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom on a trip to St. John USVI. I took 1800 pictures underwater over 1 week, and there was no leakage, and no vignetting (as suggested by other review). With this particularly camera it was easy to change button settings on...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
This is the only underwater housing I could find for a Canon A560. It did keep the camera safe and dry, so I was able to get pictures (snorkeling) that I couldn't have gotten otherwise. It was not, however, an ideal solution. It didn't fit that well, so many pictures were ruined with a black vignetting from the plastic tube that surrounds the lens. Also, I was not able to...

This review is from: Underwater Housing Camera Case for Canon Powershot A720, A650, A630, A590, A580, A570, & A560 Digital Cameras (Rated Depth of 30') (Electronics)

With this particularly camera it was easy to change button settings on the front of the camera (e.g., ISO, exposure, menu settings, etc). I could also easily view the images underwater, which was necessary because I had to delete a few hundred while floating in the water to make room for some turtle shots. The zoom on this my canon is a slider and I was unable to use it effectively while underwater with this housing, but that's more of a problem with the camera than a $20 housing. I was very pleased with the quality of the pictures, which were certainly much better than the disposable underwater cameras I used on previous trips. I also liked the fact that I could have the camera on the beach without worry of sand. The picture quality is not as good out of the water if you don't get rid of salt residue; however, I found it was easy to unscrew the front part to take a few scenery pictures without having to remove the entire camera from the housing. This provided maximum quality out of water and great quality in the water. One tip I'll provide is to use Energizer AA Lithium Battery 7X POWER in the camera. I discovered in the past that these 7X Energizer batteries last forever with digital point and shoot cameras. I shot 1800 pictures (including viewing them all and deleting about 500) WITHOUT having to change the 2 AA batteries. Note that I didn't use the flash underwater, but still, this was impressive battery performance.

Overall, I'm glad I didn't spend $200 on a much better housing (e.g., for my digital SLR). This $20 housing with my $100 camera did what I needed...take decent fish pictures. I'll try to post some pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works best underwater, August 23, 2010

When i used this for my snorkeling trips in the Caribbean, I would put my camera inside before I left for the snorkeling trip. This was done so that I didn't have to fight with the waterproof case while I was out on th boat. The problem arose once I was using it underwater, and I wanted to use it above water, I ended up with water spots on the lens and in the pictures. Not that big of a concern though. Overall, it worked exactly like I wanted it to. My Canon was used underwater unscathed. Also, the tether works great to make sure the camera doesn't get away from you while swimming around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to use Exisiting Camera for Underwater Photos, February 24, 2010

I have been using this underwater housing camera case for my Canon Powershot A590IS almost daily in the Caribbean for the month of February. The results have been excellent and compare favorably to the high end custom underwater cameras and/or cases.

It is simple and yet very effective in the important areas. I use it for both underwater videos and still photos. The still photos are shot using the "Scene" Mode and "Aquarium" setting and render well balanced color. Luckily, the "SCN" (Scene) and Movie mode selections are adjacent on the selector knob so that I can change between them while under water. (Since, there is no direct connection to the selection knob, I am able to use my thumbnail through the soft plastic cover to turn the knob between only the two adjacent selections.) The videos have been outstanding.

I learned quickly that once the camera is in the bag, it is advisable to turn it on, and adjust as needed, to insure the lens is unobstructed before attaching the sealing hardware on the the end of the case.

I'm still in the process of trying to find the correct way and method to take pictures. Still haven't been able to get the perfect result. But this thing does what it says. It gives us an entire new dimension of photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwater Housing Camera Case, October 5, 2009

I bought the housing to protect the camera on a canoe trip, not so much for taking pictures underwater. I found it cumbersome to try to work the camera controls through the bag. I also found that the lens didn't always line up with the lens 'hole' and I got camera errors for that. I finally gave up on it pretty quickly... and "just tried to be careful" with the camera. I almost dropped it in the lake once. When not in use, I stored it in a pack in a zip-lock bag. Maybe someday I'll use the underwater housing "bag" for some real underwater pictures...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not quite waterproof, July 30, 2009

I took my camera in this housing snorkeling. It seemed waterproof at first and I was able to take a few pictures. However after about a half hour of use the camera started to fog up. I swam back to shore but the damage was done. My camera was ruined.

This may be an acceptable solution for brief exposure to water, such as taking your camera out on a boat. However, if you want to actually put your camera in the water I would recommend a more expensive higher quality housing. It is not worth it to save $100 dollars to risk losing a much more expensive camera.

this little plastic pouch fits around camera nicely and the camera is easily removable. I bought this specifically to take snorkeling. We have tried it in our pool and it took great pics.

1.0 out of 5 stars OK I guess, But Mine Leaked, June 24, 2009

Used it for a snorkeling trip during our Caribbean Cruise. It is a little hard to get the camera in and out quickly (3 screw knobs and 2 plastic pieces) but that part is Ok.

The part that is not OK is that it leaked.. letting salt water get into my camera. Luckily the pictures turned out OK, but there was at least a few ounces of water in the bag as well.

My camera works sort of, but malfunctions frequently, so I'm going to have to buy another camera before our next vacation.
