Biography

Since childhood, doctors warned Joshua Radin—who, as a toddler suffered a punctured eardrum, that he ran a grave risk of piercing pain if he ever immersed himself in water. “I said, ‘Alright, I’m just going to live my life on land,’” he explained. That changed last year. He was penning Underwater in Los Angeles in near seclusion—an antidote to the last ... Read more in Amazon's Joshua Radin Store

Editorial Reviews

2012 release, the fourth album from the Ohio-born singer/songwriter. Though Joshua Radin enjoyed singing during his childhood, the Cleveland native never intended to be a professional musician. Instead, he studied drawing and painting at Northwestern University, following his college years with stints as an art teacher, screenwriter, and art gallery employee. Eventually, Radin took a stab at songwriting and played one of his earliest compositions, "Winter," for his friend Zach Braff. The burgeoning actor/director took an immediate liking to the song, and "Winter" eventually found its way onto Braff's hit television show Scrubs in early 2004. The rest, as they say, is history...

5.0 out of 5 stars DEAR MUSIC APPRECIATORS August 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Dear Music Appreciators,

Joshua Radin has the kind of singing voice that makes me want to take off all my clothes and slip into a candlelit bubble bath. And I don't take baths.

So far Radin is Mr. Consistent, having now released an album every two years since his debut in 2006 - each of them sharing to some degree the same bubble bath quality:

2006 = WE WERE HERE
2008 = SIMPLE TIMES
2010 = THE ROCK AND THE TIDE
2012 = UNDERWATER

And he has proven to be Mr. Reliable to directors and producers, having placed over 75 of his songs in television shows and movies.

The Joshua Radin story is seldom told without mention of Josh's friend SCRUBS star Zach Braff helping him find his big break, or Ellen DeGeneres choosing Josh to play at her wedding.

But what about this album? Is it good?

Yes.

Tracks 1-4 have a catchy, shuffling, singer-songwriter quality. "Five and Dime" introduces string based orchestral arrangements that blossom into full Nick Drake flavor on the next track "Here's Where We Begin." - making the song feel a little like a lost track from the BRYER LAYTER sessions.

"Underwater" had me thinking of that scene with Dustin Hoffman at the bottom of the pool in THE GRADUATE - and the song contains a pleasing surge in tempo near the 2:42 mark that that helps turn a good tune into a great tune with a great ending.

As is the case with Radin's other records, things get a bit sleepy and less memorable during the last half of the album (except for "The Greenest Grass," which is excellent), but it's still all good stuff - good enough that even if you fall asleep while listening, you might keep coming back to listen again and again - and with a quality artist like Joshua Radin, sometimes even the sleepy and less obvious songs reveal themselves slowly over time and become just as valuable as the easy pleasers.

Sincerely,

Constant Listener

Joshua Radin is, hands-down, the BEST singer-songwriter on the music scene today and his new album 'UNDERWATER' is probably the best of his four albums, though they are all masterpieces. It is beautifully written, sung and arranged and includes guests such as musical luminaries Benmont Tench and Jim Keltner. I just cannot say enough good things about this album--it is stunning. And, by all means, catch Joshua on his Summer and Fall tours--his concerts are absolute magic. Buy this album--you will not be sorry. Standout cut--"The Greenest Grass"--brought tears to my eyes...

4.0 out of 5 stars Voice similar to Paul Simon September 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this to be a most enjoyable, mellow CD. His voice and style remind me quite a bit of Paul Simon's earlier music which I like alot. Definitely not for those who like hard rock, heavy metal, but a very good choice for people who like a singer with a lovely, mellow voice with very nice music to complement the voice.

Personally, I think it's a good addition to any Joshua Radin collection however I think the overuse of strings gets to be a bit much after a couple of songs as you can clearly hear... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite for some reason
Seemed to like the songs much better when he was performing on TV. Just not one of my favorites that I have to listen to a lot.
It did arrive in a timely fashion
