Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Underwater Moonlight (MP3 Download)
The MP3 version of this album has 40 tracks, suggesting it's the 2010 reissue with bonus tracks. However, the CD version I'd like to purchase only lists the original 10 tracks. Can anyone clear this up? I'd like to buy the CD but I want to make sure I'm getting the expanded reissue and this is a case where the Amazon description isn't helpful, which has burnt me in the past. Many thanks to anyone who's already purchased this and can clarify the product description. Thanks!UPDATE: I purchased this CD, the 2010 Yep Roc rerelease, expecting the 30 bonus tracks that's supposed to be part of that release. What I didn't realize until someone kindly commented on my previous "review" question was that the bonus tracks are not on the physical CD - you are supposed to get them as a free download. It would appear this is true if you buy the MP3 album from Amazon, but I purchased the physical CD. When I went to Yep Roc's website to download the additional content I cannot find it anywhere - it only seems to give me the option to download free sample tracks from other albums they sell. It appears that I would have gotten the additional bonus content if I had purchased directly from Yep Roc rather than Amazon. Unfortunately, I ordered both this album and A Can of Bees from Amazon, so I'm unable to get any of the desired additional content. So... buyer beware if this is something you care about: either purchase the Amazon MP3 album or buy it directly from Yep Roc. BTW, the album itself is amazing... but you probably already know that and agree it's a masterpiece, making the bonus content all that more desirable! If I can get Yep Roc to figure out a way to deliver the bonus content I'll write a proper review, but buying this album has become a real cluster!#*%

MONO?!?,
By Patrick Ogelvie (Wilmington, NC, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Underwater Moonlight (Vinyl)
I ordered this along with the YepRoc vinyl reissue of A CAN OF BEES. I've been a Soft Boys/Hitchcock fan for many years and have never had the chance to enjoy these masterworks on vinyl, much less in a restored/remastered form, so these were quite welcome additions to my vinyl collection. The packaging, pressing and added value material (i. e. downloads) from YepRoc are first-rate, as usual. I was especially thrilled to learn from the sticker on the shrinkwrap that UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT had been mastered from original sources (I had long suspected that previous CD reissues were derived from lesser sources). Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the entire album is MONO. I played the new version of A CAN OF BEES just before that and the stereo action we've all come to know and love on that album was all there. At first I thought it was an equipment issue, but after jiggling every wire, turning every knob and flicking every switch, it still sounded like mono to me. Then I put on the new 2LP 45rpm pressing of XTC's SKYLARKING (highly recommended from Ape Records) and the crickets etc. at the beginning of "Summer's Cauldron" were chirping away in beautiful stereo. Using the tools of my trade (recording engineer), I then played the album through my audio workstation and the phase meter confirmed it - the record's basically mono. I checked both the Ryko CD, the later Matador double CD and my sanity and sure enough, both are full stereo (in some cases as extreme as several tracks on A CAN OF BEES). I understand the initial test pressings of these LPs were rejected and better sources were sought (in the case of A CAN OF BEES an original vinyl copy) which is, of course, highly commendable. The info in the runout groove of UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT contains the notation "RE-2" which would seem to indicate that the first two cuts were not up to scratch. The cut that resulted in the released LP certainly sounds good overall, with a much more prominent high end and less of the lower midrange "mud" that made the CDs a bit disappointing, but it's a pity nobody noticed that it was mono.
