Book Description

0240514335 978-0240514338 July 1996
This book focuses on the practical art of taking underwater pictures through the author's popular 'think and consider' system. Practical examples take you step-by-step through the basic techniques, from photographing shipwrecks, divers, fish and abstract images to taking photographs at night and 'dual lighting.'

Written in a clear, non-technical style and illustrated in color throughout, this book has established itself as the introductory guide to photographing the wonders of the underwater world. It has now been fully updated and expanded to include five new chapters containing new techniques and examples, more inspirational images and the very latest equipment.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Packed with beautiful images and an easy-to read style, this book is both educational and inspirational."

Scuba Diving Magazine

Praise for the previous edition: "In its third edition, The Underwater Photographer has evolved to become almost a standard work of reference. Martin Edge has developed his writing skills over the years, and we recommend this volume for anyone pursuing the now-less-than black art of underwater photography, especially with digital image-gathering in mind."--DIVE MAGAZINE PUBLICATION OF THE YEAR "..let us just say that this is THE best underwater photo technique book on the market... PERIOD!"--DIVER magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all underwater photographers., October 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Underwater Photographer (Paperback)
I have read most of the popular books on the subject but I found this book compelling. The author does not waste time dronning on and on about all the different kinds of equipment. He concentrates on the mind and the eye....the heart and the sole (his words not mine) and he does just that. For once Martin Edge discusses all the tricksof the trade about how particular shots are obtained. He discloses the number of shots that he got wrong before the one that he was pleased with. There are chapters on Patience, Concentration, and Subject Selection. What I most enjoyed about the book was the section on the TC System, It means Think and Consider and it is a concept that he encourages all underwater photographers to do underwater before they press the shutter. The images are stunning and its a book I could read over and over again. I strongly recomend this book to any underwater photographer. It will, I am sure, improve their underwater photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is where the journey begins., June 18, 2009

Ned Middleton (British professional underwater photo-journalist & author) - See all my reviews

It is the many photographs I have seen taken by this man which make me realise I still have a long way to go as far as mastering the art of underwater photography is concerned.

Time was when every newly trained scuba diver would talk about the diving facility they are going to open now that they have learned to dive. Not so any more. Today, they are more conscious of the underwater environment and are keen to progress on to underwater photography. Well this is where that journey towards taking successful pictures begins. Martin Edge has mastered the art of underwater photography and has that indefinable knack of being able to teach others what he knows - and very successfully indeed.

So, if you are contemplating buying your first underwater camera - or if you have already done so, then get a copy of this book and do 2 things. Firstly, read it. Then wait a week and read it again! My own photographs were first published in 1974 and my first underwater pictures in 1979. Right now, my work has appeared every single month for the past 7 years. Yet I have still learned a lot from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular!, April 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Since I read the third edition of this book six times, I bought the fourth with some reservations, thinking only a little would be new. I was dead wrong! The book has been entirely re-written and is -- once again to Martin Edge's credit -- simply the best book I have ever read on my passion, underwater photography. So if you've liked the third edition, get the fourth. You'll love it.
