Book Description

Historic Fashions Calendars September 15, 2002
From stays, corsets, and bustles to designer bras and bustiers, foundations have shaped not only the history of fashion but also the way we see ourselves. Undergarments, which molded the silhouette, and body linens, which protected expensive outer clothing from body oils, were once hidden beneath historic fashions. Today, they have made the transition to outerwear. Enjoy a look at the design inspirations for today’s bustiers, skirts, and shirts in this Costume Society of America Book on the Wall, the Historic Fashions Calendar for 2003. A portion of calendar sales benefit Costume Society of America's programs and awards. This year's calendar features twelve North American costume collections and their objects of dress and appearance: Karen Augusta Antique Lace & Fashion; the MDD Collection; the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History; American Costume Studies; Iowa State University's Costume and Textile Collection; the Fairfield, Connecticut, Historical Society; the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame; the Historic Costume Collection at the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Theatre and Dance; the Commercial Pattern Archive of the Rhode Island Library; Kentucky Historical Society; Colorado State University; and the Vincent Collection.

I have this whole series of calendars. And I can tell you, I have NEVER used them to keep track of the days. They are wealth of information and pictures, for historical costuming and collecting. I reference them often. They are filled with short but concise descriptions of the items featured. The photos, aren't limited to just the facing page each month either. There are pictures and descriptions covering the gridded "calendar" area and margins as well. If you love full color layouts of antique clothing and accessories, you'll love almost all the calendars by this author. And if you haven't had enough just looking at the pictures, the museums that own the pieces are listed. So you can go visit them.
