5.0 out of 5 stars Great, laugh, cry, cheer them on, moving, very discriptive
A wonderful moving book about a couples trek across our wonderful country. You share the joys and disappointments as they go along. Wonderfully discriptive word pictures of people and places. They also pick up lots of litter along the way. Writer shares the ups and the downs, it wasn't always a picnic, which adds to it's allure. It starts with...

3.0 out of 5 stars Complain, Complain Walk Across America
Get Real! He should have left his Albatross at home. No mention of REAL walkers: John Day or John Muir to name only two. Hanket does acknowledge the generosity of his fellow Americans but there seems to be an underpinning of "the country owes us" going on. I am not sure that I would take his advice on much of anything.

They also pick up lots of litter along the way. Writer shares the ups and the downs, it wasn't always a picnic, which adds to it's allure. It starts with "Caitlin" in Massachusetts giving Glen her "only" lucky gold coin, and ends with Caitlin and her coin. I've read lots of adventure books this rates right up there with the best. This is a refreshing book about a newlywed couple that walks across the country, picking up litter as they go. It describes the beautiful scenery they walk through, the wonderful people that they meet, and the hardships they face on their journey. I've had the opportunity to speak with Glen Hanket in person and had a nice visit with him. The book is a peek into the diary he kept on his journey.

I bought a copy for myself and a copy for my parents as a Christmas gift. They both read it and enjoyed it a lot. I just finished it myself. Most of us would never dare to take the journey that Glen and Sue took, but we can walk it vicariously through their story.

I found the details interesting, both the ups and the downs. Their walk across America wasn't always sunshine and roses. The kindness of strangers toward them, though, never ceased to surprise them (or me).

Their message is a simple reminder to all of us to do our part to keep America looking great. The message is repeated often in the book, but in a subtle way. It isn't overly preachy. For me, it was really the people that they meet that made this a fascinating story to read. Glen and Sue often quote the conversations that they had with people that they encountered. Sometimes the conversations were about litter, but usually it goes beyond that and we learn about the lifestyles of a variety of people across the States. Glen and Sue get to experience a day in the life of many citizens as they help with activities while visiting their towns; including collecting maple syrup, helping with flood relief, and herding sheep.

I am not about to walk across the country picking up litter, but as I take my dog for a walk I am more aware and more willing to pick up litter that I come across. They picked up hundreds of bags of trash and gave everyone a good reminder that we can help out more. Thanks Glen and Sue!

It has been a lot of years since this walk and not much has changed even if the media wants us to believe that it has. If one is contemplating a like journey, they should read and study more sources than this one.
