Editorial Reviews

Underworld
In the Underworld, Vampires are a secret clan of modern aristocratic sophisticates whose mortal enemies are the Lycans (werewolves), a shrewd gang of street thugs who prowl the city's underbelly. Noone knows the origin of their bitter blood feud, but the balance of power between them turns even bloodier when a beautiful young Vampire warrior and a newly-turned Lycan with a mysterious past fall in love. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in this modern-day, action-packed tale of ruthless intrigue and forbidden passion all set against the dazzling backdrop of a timeless, Gothic metropolis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice package deal for first-time Underworld buyers, January 15, 2009
This review is from: Underworld/Underworld: Evolution (DVD)
I enjoyed Underworld and Evolution, but I hadn't gotten around to adding them to my library. The timely bundling/repackaging of these two films (to coincide with the Rise of the Lycans premier) seemed like the best value for investing in the DVDs.

The main selling point for me is that this double feature includes the unrated extended cut of the first film -- which wasn't immediately obvious on Amazon's product page at the time of this writing. I had to go to Circuit City and look on the back of the box to confirm. An added bonus if you buy this in a store is the online promotional code to see Lycans for free in the theater (a $10 value). It's also unclear if the Amazon version includes the movie ticket, as there's no mention of it.

It's worth noting the extended cut in this release does not contain the second bonus disc from the original extended cut release, which means you won't be getting the extra featurettes -- or the mini comic book. The original "Fangs vs. Fiction" documentary, outtakes, and commentary are still present, so it's not completely stripped. The Evolution disc is essentially unchanged.

In summary, if you already own the extended cut and sequel DVDs, this new Double Feature packaging doesn't give you anything you don't already have -- other than a new cover pic of dual-wielding hottie Kate (and the Lycans theater ticket code if you purchase at brick and mortar). However, first-time death dealers will find a lot of value for a bargain price. Take a bite!

3.0 out of 5 stars VAMPIRES VERSES LYCONS, January 27, 2012
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Underworld/Underworld: Evolution (DVD)
Plotting is slowly developed in and around the various action sequences; battles between vampires and lycons. As the story emerges, we learn that the story dates back 600 years to when the lycons guarded the vampires by day, until a betrayal gave the lycons the overall edge and started an era of distrust.

Now, the life-eternal is a continual power struggle between the two groups, also within each group and occurring in an Underworld void of human beings. So, the plot is removed from the usual struggles for humans to end the threat. There are no humans, only hybrids; a perfect mating between vampire and werewolf. Scott Speedman plays such a hybrid.

Kate Beckinsale plays a powerful vampire, almost queen-like. The mystery of her heritage is unlocked in Underworld Evolution, as she and Speedman team to end the treachery.

The two discs represent good entertainment. Costumes and action sequences are very life-like.
