4.0 out of 5 stars  See all reviews (1 customer review)
Returning for their final film in the Big Town series, crusading newspaper editor Steve Wilson (Reed) and his girl Friday Lorelei Kilbourne (Brooke) come to the aid of wayward teenage boys by paroling them under his care. Steve attempts to set up jobs and a Youth Center for the boys, ... putting five of them on a basketball team. However, local gangsters soon use the center to hide their ill-gotten gains and try to throw a basketball match with the boys, aided by one of the boys, Tommy. After one of Tommy's fellow miscreants is killed, Tommy amends his ways and helps put the gangsters away for good with Steve and Lorelei's help. Look for former Our Gang members "Alfalfa" Switzer and Tommy "Butch" Bond as two of the teenage hoodlums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scandalous!, May 30, 2010

This review is from: Underworld Scandal (DVD)
This drama from 1948 features former child stars Darryl Hickman(MGM Our Gang ''comedies''mid-1940's) Tommy ''Butch''Bond (Little Rascals) Carl ''Alfalfa'' Switzer (Little Rascals) Stanley Clements (Bowery Boys 1950's) & Roland Dupree. I don't seem to recall an actor named Roland Dupree. Darryl Hickman's younger brother Dwayne starred on tv's Dobie Gillis in the late 50's & early 60's. Also starring Philip Reed & Hillary Brooke. All of the boys are caught breaking into a jewelry shop. But they're caught & taken to juvenile court. The judge agrees to give them probation since they're all first offenders-If a responsible adult will look after them. Steve Wilson(Reed)is convinced by his girlfriend Lorelei Kilbourne(Brooke) to help the boys.Steve is editor of Illustrated Press a local BigTown newspaper. He thinks it would be a great story. But how do you keep the boys out of trouble? By using an old newspaper warehouse as a recreation center for them! The boys all become very good basketball players. In the meantime Tommy Malone (Clements)has secretly got in trouble again. Tommy has met up with an old friend who's running a stolen fur racket -which Tommy learns by accident. Tommy will keep his mouth shut for a share of the profits.Tommy is also forced to gamble on the Big Town Big Shots basketball games- & occasionally throw a game. Before long things start looking suspicious. By the end of the movie Tommy has caused more trouble for the other boys-leading to tragedy. My main reason for seeing this is because I'm a big fan of Alfalfa vs. Butch from Our Gang. I hope to see more of their other movies soon. Underworld Scandal could've used a little hd remastering by Alpha Video. But the picture quality isn't bad either it's watchable. By the way this movie was based on a radio program called Big Town. Hope you like it too!
