Editorial Reviews

“Undines resonates with an uncanny combination of timely relevance and timeless wisdom. This book's message is powerful and inspiring.”—Philip Carr-Gomm, author of The Druid Way“A unique and entertaining vision of the elemental realms. Undines presents us with a fascinating glimpse into the author's very personal relationship with the universal underpinnings of reality. This book will undoubtedly inspire a deeper respect and affection for the intelligent forces of nature.”—Rawn Clark, author of A Bardon Companion“William Mistele not only articulates how mermaids see humanity, he helps us develop their inner connection to rivers, lakes, and oceans so that our love of nature becomes as deep as theirs.”—Rich Budnick, author of Hawaii's Forgotten History“By revealing the mysterious life of the sea through personal encounter and dialogue, William R. Mistele gives undines, mermaids, and water spirits the serious attention they deserve.”—Caitlín Matthews, author of Singing the Soul Back Home

More About the Author

I was born in Detroit, Michigan. My parents were extraordinarily dynamic. They were patrons of all the major Christian evangelists in the United States. They had contact with many political and business leaders. When it came to motor boats, sailboats, planes, and cars, they either set new records or owned some of the most famous ones in the world.

In this enchanting environment, you could come down to breakfast in the morning and meet a house guest like Captain Fuchida who led the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. You could hear the Captain and my mother discussing previously undisclosed details about the causes of World War II.

However, surrounded as I was by relatives who were masters of engineering, business enterprise, law, and accounting, I pursued a different path.

I graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois with a BA in philosophy and a minor in economics. At that time, I began studying esoteric, oral traditions. In genuine mythology, individuals come into contact with the creative powers of the human spirit. Words and language possess a symbolic and imaginative quality that is magical. To understand an idea is to experience it from within. This involves a life long, transforming journey--if you change the self, you change the world.

As part of my field research, I lived in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Berkeley, California. I next studied Hopi Indian culture and language at the University of Arizona where I received a Masters degree in linguistics. At that time I became the only accepted student of a Hopi Indian shaman.

While living in Tucson, Arizona I began studying the Western hermetic traditions and the nature religions of Wiccans and Druids. I worked with a number of extremely gifted psychics and parapsychologists whose primary focus was on experimentation and research. I also practiced evocation with a Sufi master.

I then moved to Hawaii in 1982. There I studied with the relocated abbot of a Taoist monastery that existed for over two thousand years in China, a Vietnamese Zen master, and one of the foremost Tai Chi Chuan masters of China.

Since 1975, I have been a steadfast student of the system of initiation taught by the Czech magician, Franz Bardon, who died in the fifties. This system has provided the methods for contacting nature spirits and interacting with them in a personal and original manner. Franz Bardon's mission was to offer a system of self-initiation that maximizes the spiritual powers and creativity of the individual.

Over the years I have worked as a group facilitator and a mediator in family and divorce mediation. I have taught as a civilian instructor for the U.S. navy and marines. I have researched investing strategies for individuals' portfolios. I am also a life long student researching strategies for resolving international conflicts.

I consider myself a spiritual anthropologist. Expanding on Bardon's purposes, I am integrating into his system the wisdom of a large number of traditions. To this end, I have created a new genre of modern fairy tales. These stories are not about belief or faith but direct experience. They open gates to other realms where we discover the keys to what is missing from life.
The reason I write fairy tales instead of presenting a book on case studies in anthropology is that there is no way to account for what they are or why these women exist among us. The fairy tale/mythology context, on the other hand, allows me to explain how mermaids who dwell in the body of women fill in for what is missing from human experience.

In 1998, I created a teaching website where I post my research and writings. This site currently offers a free correspondence course and on-going seminar for developing undine empathy.

I am also establishing an archive on this site that gathers individuals' experiences with undines/mermaids from around the world. The goal is to expand and add clarity to the body of world literature in this area.
See shell.lava.net/~pagios/videopoems.html

The above location also includes biographies, specific traits, and other material related to a new type of personality never before described--mermaid type women. In the best fairy tale tradition, I video tape interviews with women and a few men who are highly empathic and closely tied to nature. A compelling case can be made that they are not human beings but mermaids and mermen in human bodies. I write fairy tales to tell the back story of how they acquired human bodies and why they have chosen to dwell among us.

No matter who you are, this book may change you. Read it at your own risk, for you may be infected with an incurable longing to become more than what you are, or plagued with sobering realizations about what passes for the human condition, or even gripped by an unquenchable fascination for the beauty and possibilities that still dwell beyond the reach of even humanity's most sophisticated sciences and arts.

Whether these stories are fact or fiction makes no difference. Like a genie that has been let out of a bottle, once a certain idea has appeared on a page it cannot be dismissed. Simply reading the words is a compelling experience, and the very fact that words can describe an experience betrays its ultimate reality. Not that the experience is buried deeply in our collective subconcious, but that something deeply buried there is roused with a dim recognition that something goes beyond.

This is truly a book for a new age, but not the New Age that has been selling in one form or another for five decades. It heralds a new dispensation where ancient truths are not just revived or reinterpreted, but are revealed starkly to be just part of the truth, and not the entire story about what spirituality is, or what humanity might become.

Yea, pretty much what I wrote up there ^...after reading his last book then this one, the best way to describe my personal feelings whilst reading through this book is with one simple word; ecstasy. What an amazing account of interacting with incarnations of the vast mystery of love, that is water, one of the most fundamental investors in our existence, which calls for us to look within, into our own never ending fountain of youth, the fountain of love and wonder. Loved the interviews, and knowing that people like this exist, and then realizing that is within all our potentials to genuinely manifest this serenity and help our fellow humans cultivate it too, by being. Many thank yous to the author for writing this wonderful work.

I didn't know quite what to expect when a friend gifted me this book, kind of assuming it was more of an historical account of undines or mermaids going back throughout mythology and folklore. Instead, it is a powerful and poetic journey through consciousness, channeling, and archetypes. Women, water, empathy, and love are they keywords and themes that pervade. This book is useful if you are a creative person really trying to understand what this particular type of elemental spirit would think, feel, look, smell, and sound like. Even if you are skeptical of so-called "channeled" material (I'm on the fence myself but keep an open mind), the author writes in such a way that you feel fully immersed in the experience and emotions and for that alone it is worth a swim. Highly metaphysical for someone new to this genre but very readable and a unique experience.

Words from a visionary that ring true, even if the actual tales might be fiction. They are true in that they reflect the experience of an unusual human being in contacting paraphysical creatures. Beautifully written; if you you are interested in elemental beings, this book will be of interest to you.

Very interesting book. Some may consider the subject matter too metaphysical, but the author provided food for thought and a different way to see creatures of the sea.
