A rebuttal to a so called "Critic" from a true listener,
By DamienD744@aol.com (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Undiscovered Few (Audio CD)
It has become a real crying shame that in order to become a top rated Guitar player today by the so called "Music Critic" (most of whom have never even picked up an musical instrument or if they have did not become proficient enought and gave up)you have to play and sound like one of the few "Marketable Guitar Players" eg. George Benson, Pat Metheny, John Scofield et all, to earn the "Music Critic" accolades. There are less than ten Guitar Players who can be considered World'Best. Rodney Jones is definitely in that elite group. Having followed Rodneys' career since he was with Dizzy as a teenager I know! You see Rodney can emulate any of the mainstream "Marketable Guitar" players but chooses not too, so much so that George Benson has stated when asked about Rodney Jones' playing said "Rodney can out play me with my own stuff and is probably the most versatile guitar player I have ever ment". All this to say what? When someone comes along with a new innovative sound there are always those who simply don't get it. As Miles said many times when asked about his music, "Let the music speak for it self". I say the same about Rodneys' latest CD, let it speak for it self and it will! One might have too listen to it more than one time (like most "Critics" don't do) to really hear, feel, and understand the spirtual content of whats being said. Belive me if you do you will hear something you've never heard before. It will touch your heart, your soul and your spirt. It will grow on you and each time you listen you will hear something new and more beautiful! As Pat Metheny has said "Jazz should be played loud". Play Rodneys'CD it loud! and you will see what I mean, it speaks for it self.Damien Durham a guitar player for over thirty years :)

Undiscovered Excellence,

I came across this CD last year while stumbling through Amazon's new Jazz releases, and noticed this recording. After listening to the samples and reading about Mr. Jones I decided to order it. After my first listen I was completely blown away by the depths and beauty of Jones' guitar playing. I now cannot remove this CD from my changer. Jones, in my view, is probably one of the most promising and complete young guitarist practicing the art form of Jazz today. Pick this one up and get "The Message"(track 8).

Undiscovered Genius,

This CD has to be one of best in recent years. Rodney plays with effortless clarity and precision. He also shows himself to be a most resourceful and creative composer. Its great to see him recording for such a great and historic label like Blue Note. Hopefully, this is just the first of future masterpieces to follow for this under recorded (as a leader) genius.

The best guitarist EVER,

If you haven't checked out Rodney Jones by now, you need to. This breakthrough recording showcases not only Rodney's trend-setting ideas on the guitar through horn-like phrashing and Articulation, but truly beautiful numbers like "Tears of a forgotten Child" and "Through The Eyes of a Child". Rodney is a multi-faceted musician who has always proven to be the greatest, but thank God that all of his ideas, spiritually and musically have finally been captured onto an audio recording.

Don't beleive the bulls--t.,

Critics are entitled to their opinion. Unfortunately, opinions are like a--holes; everybody has one, and most of them stink. This musical effort is well appreciated by true jazz fans. To Rodney, I just listened to the samples and thought,"What is this critic talking about?" The flow of the music is effortless. Maybe the guy listens to too much Pat Boone.

The best CD I own,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Undiscovered Few (Audio CD)
"The Undiscovered Few" is a journey through jazz, with great horn and ensemble arranging, incredible improvising, and beautiful compositions. This is the first album in which Rodney Jones shows us that he is a multi-dimensional talent and he has been influenced by many different musical styles and people. As a guitarist and composer, I am floored by the depth and feel of Rodney's playing and writing abilities. For what jazz is, has become, once was, and will be, Rodney Jones is it.

The Undiscovered Few is wonderful!,

I thoroughly enjoyed The Undiscovered Few by Rodney Jones. Though I do not know much about jazz, I can appreciate good music when I hear it and this CD fits the category "good music". I even think it fits the category "great music", but that's my opinion. There is a variety of music on this CD that catches your heart and captivates the listener's attention. A prime example of this is the song "through the eyes of a child". It is the prettiest song with Rodney Jones playing the guitar and Jesse Levy playing the cello. It gave me chills! Over all, I love The Undiscovered Few and recommend it to anyone :)

The Best Jazz CD on the Market,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Undiscovered Few (Audio CD)
Those who find serious fault with Jones' new CD are most likely not experienced jazz-lovers. For those who appreciate truly fine music, this CD is a must-have. Each piece is obviously written from the heart, and the music is great.

This really is a nice CD. Rodney's playing has a distinctive sound and the tunes are very interesting. The CD features a number of horns which add to the interest of the music. Easily one of the best of 1999.
