A very original vampire story with amazing art by Tomm Coker. It's an incredibly well done comic series. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great filmlike art, April 24, 2013

This is indeed a splendid comic book and I must give all stars though I'm a bit tired of sensitive vampires here, there and everywhere. The art is fantastic and art and plot together is so filmlike that it is a pleasure and reminds you that comic art can be seen as a link between litterature and film. The colors are moody douche and the artist always play with light and shadows even in the face of the main caracter who looks very much like actor Russel Crowe. When I will be tired of reading the story I'll take it from the shelf and just enjoy the art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick This Up For The Gritty Noir Art & Story, November 3, 2011
This review is from: Undying Love TP (Paperback)
I picked up this book because of the cool realistic / film-noir art by Tomm Coker. I have to admit that I was initially a bit wary of yet another vampire-based story after the genre's massive onslaught on the pop culture scenes in recent years. But my curiosity for the art forced me to just go grab a copy.

Turned out it was a great read. The plot is simple: a jaded ex-soldier tough guy named John Sargent got hooked up with a mysterious Chinese girl, Mei, who happens to be a vampire. In order to cure the girl from her vampirism, the man decided to hunt down the vampire that was responsible for transforming his girlfriend. The catch: the vampire is the baddest in history. Part of the appeal of the book is the fact that the exposition is given minimally. There is a group of maybe-good-maybe-bad gang led by a shape-shifting lady who can turn into a fox. The bad guy also dispatches his own group of shape-shifting vampires that can turn into crows. We are intrigued by the back-story behind these supporting characters. The minimum dialog is also a plus point here as the narrative is also greatly enhanced and driven by the grim artistic style. Tomm Coker used a lot of shadows in his art that the art feels like a blend of Mike Mignola and Tim Bradstreet.

The Hong Kong / Canton backdrop is also another factor to love as there are many Chinese flair tossed in for good measures. The story is not finished, though. There is still no official announcement from Image regarding the series' continuation. I would definitely love to see more of John Sargent and Mei in future installments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another addition to IMAGE's list of quality comics!, October 7, 2011

Lately, the company IMAGE comics has been dishing out some of the best work in the industry. With excellent trades already out like RED MASS FOR MARS, GREEN WAKE, BLUE ESTATE & CARBON GREY, You wouldn't think there was room for more epicness. Enter UNDYING LOVE.

The trade was fantastic. It had a fresh take on the vampire scene, and never once felt cliche. The mix with vampires and Chinese mythology was a perfect idea. Its nice to see diversity in IMAGE's comics as well. A romance horror with lots of action. The art just flows so well, it really grabs your attention. The crowded city of Hong Kong was drawn so well here.

This trade was a lot of fun, and has convinced me that the people at IMAGE really do know what comics are capable of, and bring out the best in their writers and artist. I'm excited for volume two.
