Une Aventure (English Subtitled) 2005 NR

Cecile and Julien begin their new life together. Julien works long hours in a video library, a world full of pictures. Coming home late one night, he encounters a young, beautiful, disturbing woman in front of his building. She seems lost, as if in a dream. She mumbles something to him, like a call for help, and vanishes. Since this strange encounter, and maybe for the first time in his life, Julien is confused, becoming obsessed by the mystery surrounding this intriguing woman, Gabrielle. He discovers that she lives across the street with an intimidating, violent-looking man, Louis. Following her at night, Julien sees Gabrielle sleepwalking, perhaps a refugee from the distressful, dangerous world she must inhabit. Risking everything, including Cecile's love for him, Julien plunges into Gabrielle's strange but fascinating life, determined to save her from Louis, even herself, somehow hoping to avert the catastrophe that awaits her.

"Une Aventure" features Ludivine Sagnier portraying Gabrielle, a single unwed mom who is the mistress to an older independent businessman/investor. Although Gabrielle is well provided for by her lover, with a nice modern apartment and a nanny/maid, and although she is the one character in the movie who does not have to work for a living (she calls herself a "lady of leisure"), she is depressed and slowly descending into the depths of mental illness. The main question, as the movie progresses, is whom she will pull into the depths with her (we see just how deep the depths are at the very beginning of the film, as the rest fills in the story leading up to the opening scene).

Gabrielle stumbles into Julien one night, who has just moved into her neighborhood, and that triggers a relationship that draws Julien into her life, with all its problems. Julien, although he is living with a woman, starts pursuing and trying to help Gabrielle both out of human kindness and because he is attracted to her. The circle expands as we get introduced to Julien's lover, Gabrielle's lover/provider, and the wife of Gabrielle's lover/provider. This being France, it is possible for all these people to know and interact with everyone else without furniture being thrown at each other. But that doesn't mean that there aren't tensions, or that there isn't hatred buried just beneath the surface of interactions, or that everyone is going to live happily ever after.

The best performance is turned in by Bruno Todeschini as Louis, Gabrielle's lover/provider. Ludivine Sagnier shows in this role that she is more than just a pretty face, and she does an adequate job portraying a character who is the opposite of upbeat and perky.

The film makes an inspired analogy between video and memory/consciousness.

But, when the most interesting quality of one character is their fragility, and the opposite character's most interest quality is their obsession for the former character, the film lacks weight. Both these characters have interesting back-stories that are only hinted at and never explored, so they end up looking like excuses rather than reasons for their behaviour, and, in the end, I cannot gather sympathy or forgiveness for what occurs-- or even actual interest.

Ludivine Sagnier is my favorite French actress. I think she has all the talent, brains, and beauty of Catherine Deneuve. In fact, she is the Deneuve of the 21st century. I love all the films she is in, and this one is no exception. The acting is intense, believable, and Ludivine is gorgeous as usual. The plot, though somewhat downbeat, is absorbing and riveting. Highly recommended for fans.

Nothing hardcore, but there is an ample amount of topless shots and some good sexual scenes. Subtitled in English.

The plot shows why you should never mess with psycho women.

I'll watch about anything with her. This one is overly melodramatic and has the problem of all French films showing action, they can't do it well.
