1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe teacher's love this book....but
I have been using this book for one month. Our teacher choose this book this semester for the intermediate level class, which is really a mixed class with students who took the higher level. Our school doesn't provide the proper sequence after the first year of French. That too is part of the problem. Sometimes you have to wait a semester for the intermediate courses...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing grammar book !!, October 14, 2011

In my opinion, this is THE best French grammar ever written. The explanations are very comprehensive. I've taken AP French and IB French, & by practicing with this book French grammar is a piece of cake for me most of the time.

However, not recommended for beginners in French since the entire book is written in French.

This is a perfect fit for my son who is taking IB French at High School. He will use this for his junior and senior years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth It, January 10, 2011

This hits the trouble spots for native English speakers. It's a great review of grammar and construction. A few examples make no sense, but these are quibbles.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe teacher's love this book....but, October 3, 2009
I have been using this book for one month. Our teacher choose this book this semester for the intermediate level class, which is really a mixed class with students who took the higher level. Our school doesn't provide the proper sequence after the first year of French. That too is part of the problem. Sometimes you have to wait a semester for the intermediate courses.

However, this book's examples of grammatical rules are just WAY too brief. It throws out lots of new vocabulary, which is good for learning new words, BUT it would make much more sense if they listed the new vocabulary at the beginning of the chapter or somewhere in the book! So doing the exercises takes LOTS of time, keep your dictionary on hand. Your already have to decide the correct tense, French has LOTS of tenses, and correct gender to spell properly. The book is also skimpy in providing a list of conjugated verbs.

For beginning levels "Contacts" by Valette/Valette and "French in Action" are excellent books. The "Contacts" 8th edition text does an EXCELLENT JOB in explaining the RULES. They should as they charge enough for the book. I rather pay more for a book that makes what you need to know easily available or at least somewhat easily available.

"Une Fois Pour Toutes" is entirely in French but gives very little explanation of important rules you need to know when writing and reading French. My teacher used "En Bonne Forme" in the past then decided to use "Une Fois..." this semester. I hate this book! Wish we had the other.

Bon Chance!
