I just loved this book. Mariama is a wonderful writer and she has done a great job with this very human story about a woman inside a polygamous situation in Sénégal. Speaks volumes to the situation of women who have to live this and it is beautifully written to boot. I highly recommend this book.

mariaba Ba is a genius, pure and simple. Her style is breathtaking and anybody who limits himself to the english translation only is indeed missing out on a lot.

I read this book in high school for the Senior School Examination Certificate administered in Nigeria and other West African countries. This book opens one to the life of an educated African Muslim and how she contends with the deplorable behavior of her husband who hides behind "custom" and "religion" to mistreat her. Her experience unfortunately is not unique, except perhaps in the way it is presented. Madame Ba was a voice for women everywhere.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in African literature or different cultures in general. It's commentaries on both traditional African and contemporary Wester society are very insightful. Bā is classed by some as a feminist, but this really isn't fair: she merely points out the deplorable ways in which women are treated, and leaves the reader to draw an interpretation. (Definately not a ranting man-hater.)
