This review is from: Uneasy Balance: Civil-Military Relations in Peacetime America since 1783 (Hardcover)
The author is a professor of Political Science at Tulane Univ, but his understanding of military history and culture is quite remarkable.
Langston challenges conventional theory by arguing that neither civilian nor military elites deserve victory (in the struggle for power.) Examines American history following the Civil War, the Vietnam war, the end of the Cold War, and bringing the reader up through 2001, noting how balance between the civilian and military was absent. Following analysis of these time periods that will be useful to most researchers, Langston offers advice on "applying the lessons of the past."
198 pages, small type font, excellent index and bibliography.
