Book Description

December 8, 2005
In today’s uncertain economy, chances are good that you or someone you know has been drafted into the ranks of the unemployed. Record numbers of companies are scaling back their work forces daily through either attrition or early retirement.

In 2003, author Rebecca Long was downsized from her job as a communications professional. Unemployment Boot Camp is based on her personal experience with the emotions that often accompany job loss—self-pity, insecurity, and hopelessness. Long provides valuable facts, tactics, and instructions for coping, as well as recommendations on how to make the most out of your newfound freedom. Based on military-style thinking, each chapter is designed as a “Mission” and includes “Battle Plans” containing action steps and “Survival Think Tank” exercises that will help you define your dreams and goals. You will learn how to:

  • Develop an indomitable spirit
  • Build strategies to achieve staying power
  • Overcome whatever obstacles come your way
  • Take positive and productive steps throughout your career transition and beyond
  • Sharpen your skills
  • Prepare for opportunities

Job loss should never destroy your confidence or your desire to live a full life. Unemployment Boot Camp will help you redefine your objectives and overhaul your attitude for optimal success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boot Camp Believer, May 8, 2006
By
This review is from: Unemployment Boot Camp: Tactics for Surviving and Thriving in the 21st Century (Paperback)
I was feeling sorry for myself when I came across this powerful book and its boot camp concept. It was brief and engaging enough to read it in an afternoon, which I did,and that alone made me feel like I'd accomplished something. The next day I began putting the recommendations into practice and I've been going strong ever since. You may think it's self-explanatory what you need to do to dig yourself out of a rut, but I wouldn't have been able to think up the exercises that R.A. Long suggests. I think it saved me a lot in the way of legwork and time which I put to good use getting myself together. This is a must read if you're unemployed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope This Book Speaks To You, September 25, 2006
This review is from: Unemployment Boot Camp: Tactics for Surviving and Thriving in the 21st Century (Paperback)
February 7, 2009---I am quite proud of "Unemployment Boot Camp," which I wrote to help those of you who've lost a job, and along with it your sense of identity,to better cope with the stigma of job loss. I've looked at the scant number of books out there which address the topic of unemployment. They typically include information on "how to write your resume" and "how to prepare for a job interview." My book does none of these things. Instead, this book teaches you how to make "taking charge of your life" the full-time job you're looking for, enabling you to maintain and build upon your self-esteem at a time when thinking highly of yourself has become quite the challenge. Keep believing in yourself and use this time wisely---to build a better you. Please visit my website at www.unemploymentbootcamp.com to learn more about my book. And while you're there, feel free to contact me to let me know what you're doing to cope with your job loss. I plan to start a blog shortly and hope to include your story. Stay strong!

5.0 out of 5 stars Boot Camp for the Soul, May 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Unemployment Boot Camp: Tactics for Surviving and Thriving in the 21st Century (Paperback)
This book really addressed all of the elements of job loss that I experienced after getting the boot from my management career in corporate America. From the whispering in the halls before the axe begins to fall, to the sense of identity loss one feels after losing the label of what they did for a living, "Boot Camp" really captures the experience of being downsized. The "Survival Think Tank" exercises and "Battle Plan" action steps contained in each "Mission" (chapter)helped me strategize and develop an action plan for moving forward. The "can do" tone of the book encouraged me to incorporate a physical fitness routine and other behaviors into my life in order to stay mentally sharp and ready for the next opportunity. The kitschy military theme of the book works wonders with the unemployed mindset. It helped me pull myself out of bed everyday and gave me a renewed sense of purpose. I highly recommend "Unemployment Boot Camp" for anyone who's lost a job or is looking to change career paths. It will deliver fast action-oriented results!
