Unequal Contest is about the conspiracy trials against, William Langer, a leader in the populist Nonpartisan League (NPL). Langer and the NPL pushed the edge of civil justice forward while championing the cause of farmers and individuals seeking economic justice. Langer became North Dakota Attorney General and Governor. He was also the states most successful trial attorney in the 1920s and 1930s and made numerous enemies amongst the powerful and elite. He was impeached in 1934 during his term as North Dakota Governor, re-elected as Governor in 1936 and ultimately won a seat to the United States Senate where he served until his death in 1959.
