Editorial Reviews

Review

"There's a lot going on in this book, and the many-layered characters and storylines weave and interconnect with cleverness and elegance. Mansell is at her best in this book, which highlights her charming voice and engaging storytelling and also spotlights her agility with characters, effortlessly twining lightness, anguish and human foible. Moments of grace brush up against unexpected plot and character twists that lead us to the expected happy endings from unexpected directions... A graceful blend of heartbreak, humor and redemptive love. " - Kirkus

"I never met a Mansell I didn't like! Once again, she absolutely sucks me in and doesn't let me go... Jill Mansell is a master at writing books with interesting characters, great plots that I've never read before, and the perfect flow that make you want to keep reading and reading." - Book Drunkard

"There is something truly comforting in the world that Mansell has crafted. Her gentle humor and idyllic small-town setting easily capture the imagination and the endearing relationships that develop between her characters ensure a perfect escape from the mundane details of the real world... Altogether, this is a novel full of the kind of joy that Mansell's readers have come to savor and that new readers will have a hard time resisting." - RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars

"Mansell's tale of the stirring of love in spite of various heartbreaks and disappointments is a charming and, at times, madcap romantic comedy." - Booklist

"An extremely refreshing and enjoyable read." - Fic Wishes

" I have never read a Jill Mansell book that I didn't care for... One of Mansell's strong points is her ability to write with her heart and still inject some (okay, lots) of humor into the situations... I really enjoyed Mansell's book and would highly recommend her to anyone who likes chick-lit, humorous British fiction or contemporary romance. There's something for everyone in her books!" - Pudgy Penguin Perusals

"A charming novel for readers who appreciate likable characters, a romantic setting, and a happily-ever-after ending. The story is humorous with delightful surprises and a treat for those who want their romances to feature more mature characters" - Library Journal

"I found it a very enjoyable read... the story is well written and had me laughing out loud a few times at situations or from Jill Mansell's way with words." - The Book Date

"Whenever I'm in the mood for a delightfully good read I know that a book by Jill Mansell will be the perfect pick... a charming book." - Peeking Between the Pages

"What really stands out to me the most is how much I can tell Mansell enjoys writing these stories for readers. Her enthusiasm is apparent in both her plots and in the lives of her characters... Mansell will be your remedy for years to come..." - Night Owl Reviews, 4 1/2 Stars, Top Pick

The Unexpected Consequences of Love follow the lives and loves of three couples. I enjoyed the differences among the characters, their ages and lifestyles. The seaside town in which these six live is so wonderfully brought to life. Perfect reading for the cold dreary nights of winter. For just a while, I felt as if I there in the breezy Cornwall resort.

The characters became like old friends by the time I finished reading their stories especially Sophia and Tula. Josh has to work to win Sophia over, as does Riley to win Tula. It is predictable reading here but very enjoyable just the same. It is Dot and Lawrence’s story that I found most interesting. There is quite a bit of baggage collected over the forty years. I really kept reading to see if it could be left behind and a new better start be made by these two. High drama among ordinary people, I like that.

This is the first book by Jill Mansell that I have read and now I’m wondering what took me so long to find this author.

I've read many Jill Mansell books. I enjoy the easy and light reading of her novels. This book offered mindless escapism and I listened to the entire book. The story centered around Sophie, a photographer determined to leave the past in the past no matter what. Living in the sleepy seaside town of Cornwall, she managed to do just that until Josh came back home from the states to help his lovely grandmother run the family hotel. Josh fell for Sophie and Sophie did not give an inch until the very end. The supporting characters, Sophie's best friend Trula and Josh's best mate Riley, kept this book from falling completely flat. They actually had chemistry and I found myself wishing Jill Mansell had given their story more time. This book was good enough, but overall it was predictable, it dragged on too long, and there was very little in the romance department. Having said that, the characters in this book were flawed but good people. I didn't have a connection with any of them, though, since there were so many supporting characters. I felt like she was close to developing the characters, but ultimately she fell short. Beverly A. Crick was the narrator, and she just did not work for me. Her tone was flat, the voice she used for Trula was confusing and annoying (I actually found myself cringing when Trula was "speaking"). Sophie's voice was easier to listen to. The voices of the men felt forced, as though the narrator was trying too hard to make different male sounding voices.

This much thought should not go into the narration on the listener's part. It detracted from the entire experience of the otherwise mediocre (but comforting) book.

I'll read Jill again, but not in audiobook form if the same person narrates. I'll stick to the printed book and hope for better results.

Sometimes the what you think you want least is the very thing you need most.

I'm pretty sure that was on a fortune cookie I once received.

For Sophie, love is of no interest whatsoever. She wants nothing to do with it, and has convinced herself that she is happy and content living alone, free from any emotional entanglements, aside from her friends and family.

When Josh first sees her, he immediately is smitten. Josh, though, is looking for the happily ever after. He wants marriage and children; he wants forever, and he thinks he could have it with Sophie.

Sophie's BFF Tula is up for what Josh wants. In fact, she is up for Josh, full stop. He's gorgeous - all of that swarthy dark hair and virile-ness - and he's a kind, good man. Despite her many attempts to get him to be interested in her, though, Tula gets nowhere. The one thing Josh does for her is nudge her in the direction of his pal Riley, a guy whose job is that of personal assistant to his successful romance writer aunt. There is something about Tula that Riley likes, which she suspects is the fact that she keeps rejecting him. RIley is every bit as gorgeous as Josh, and women drape themselves over him like wet towels.

Then there are Josh's grandparents, who have been divorced for years. It was not a divorce that Josh's grandmother wanted, and the reasons for it still cause her pain. His grandfather, though, remains in love with her. Can she forgive him?

Jill Mansell keeps tight rein on her characters, letting us get to know them without allowing them to wander far afield. Sophie is adorable. She's a successful photographer, so she's accustomed to watching people through a lens. It's a way for her to keep her distance from anything that binds her too closely to someone.

Where is the line drawn from alone to lonely?

Sophie Wells is busy concentrating on building up her photography business to have time for a relationship. She is proving how you can turn a simple idea into a career and surrounds herself with friends knowing that her chance for love had come and gone. It is much easier she decided to leave love to the romantics. Josh Strachan is also a busy professional working away with his grandmother running a successful hotel business. He has had other major achievements but those brought money and power and never a feeling of satisfaction.

When Josh meets Sophie and they share bits and pieces of their lives with one another Josh realizes he would like more from Sophie but she has been very good at building a wall around her heart that no one could tear down and he was really trying hard to do just that. With determination and a lot of conviction Josh pursues through friends and anyone that will talk to him why Sophie is this standoffish and the problem turns out to be something he is not sure he can overcome with just a warm embrace and tender word.

There are so many action packed adventures going on in this read you will want to read it again and again. The boundaries of love are limitless and while Sophie and Josh is the core of the story you will never forget the family, friends, or exes that surround this entire book.
