Scintillating fall read! Very highly recommended,

This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
Ray Vereker breaks all her rules in accepting her latest assignment. Leaving behind her hammer and tool belt, Ray picks up her weapon to find Eli Conners' missing brother. While she acquiesces to Eli's demand to take him along, Ray remains determinedly in charge of this rescue mission. For years Ray has been a successful mercenary, yet this assignment somehow feel much different than all the rest, threatening to spiral out of her control as she discovers an unexpected attraction to her employer. Even as he tries to grow closer to her, Ray remains an enigma for Eli. He knows her abilities, her experience and her success, but he does not have names or dates. She does not look cutthroat enough, powerful enough, or hardened enough to pull of this assignment. Indeed, Eli finds it hard to believe that Ray is a mercenary until he sees her in action. But his desperation to get his brother out of Central America and her insider's knowledge mean that he must risk everything on this unexpected woman, even it means his heart. Author Lori Foster's ability to pen sultry, titillating romance is not exactly UNEXPTECTED, and fans will be delighted that she once again delivers in spades. Ray's combination of fierce warrior strength and carefully concealed femininity results in a dazzling character. Likewise, Eli's determination to get closer to her despite her reserve resoles in unexpected challenge and pleasure. Indeed, Eli and Ray prove why Foster has become one of the hottest authors in the business. UNEXPECTED comes very highly recommended.

Unexpected Is Fantastic,
By Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
Eli Conners has requested for the meanest mercenary that the agency has available. He needs help in rescuing his younger brother from a dangerous situation in Central America. The merc he gets literally takes his breath away. Ray Vereker is not your ordinary mercenary, for one thing, she is a woman. Her looks and delicate features are deceiving. Ray has sharp skills and knowledge to take on any man or woman. Ray can handle any situation but she didn't plan on this amazing attraction to Eli. Eli makes her feel and see things that she has never let into her life before and it scares her more then any mission. Eli realizes a woman like Ray comes along once in a lifetime. He really has his work cut out for him trying to convince her that they have what it takes to make it as a couple. Add to that mix, now there is a baby on the way, which really makes their situation more interesting. Lori Foster has another hit on her hands. This story has such depth and passion. It sizzles and will make you laugh out loud. This book is a must have.

Steamy jungle romance and a kick butt heroine,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
After discovering that his brother has been kidnapped in Central America, Eli Connors sets out to hire the baddest mercenary he can find. Imagine his surprise when he comes face to face with Ray Vareker, a petite yt lethal woman. Soon she is beating up the bad guys in a bar fight, and Eli knows he has found his man (or rather woman) for the job.
She reluctantly lets him go with her to Central America and after a little while, they succumb to the sexual tension for some sex in the jungle. After an exciting and harrowing escape, all return home. But Ray managed to bring a little something back from Central America when she discovers that she, the least maternal mammal on the face of the Earth is pregnant. I thought that this was one of Lori Foster's best books. For one thing, it is a stand alone book, and does not have all those awkward paragraphs devoted to explaining relationships when characters from say the Winston books are re-introduced throughout the series. Also, the dialogue is fresh - not cliche-ridden like many of her books. And lets face it, Ray is one bad mama - a flawed heroine we can all admire. For pure escapism, steamy romance, and an adrenaline rush, check this one out.

Unexpectedly bad!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
Ms. Foster introduces several romance themes into this book, but none of them work. First, the idea of a tough female mercenary leading a daring rescue in Central America is a good idea; but Ray isn't so tough except for knowing some martial arts and the rescue isn't very dangerous. Ray and Eli just fly in, grab Eli's brother, and fly out. The only tension is sexual, wondering when and where it would finally happen. Second, we already know from the cover of the book (notice the stork) that Ray turns up pregnant, which I don't mind in a story; but it was not "unexpected." Third (and last), we head on out to the ranch at the end. It is too little and too late to turn this one into a Western. Sorry, but I recommend avoiding this one entirely.

Finally... a heroine just as tough as a hero,

For once there's a female lead who can stand toe to toe with the male lead and not come off as obnoxious or unlikable. I love reading romance and it isn't always easy to keep myself from wanting to throttle a wimpy, foolish female "heroine." Lori Foster's Ray is no simpering, weak fool. She can definately hold her own in any situation and that's what I loved most about this book, not to mention the steamy love scenes! Ray is a nice mix of strong and vulnerable. I highly recommend this book because it's not often you find a strong female protagonist who can throw-down in a fight or in the bedroom.

Cover is bad- but book is fun,
By J. Murphy (Raleigh, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
This time we have an Alpha male and Alpha female. Ray (the heroine) is a hired mercenary to search and rescue Eli's (the Hero) brother from the jungles of Central America. Ray is very good at her job and has a hard time letting down her guard. She doesn't trust men with a lot of money. And Eli has a a lot. Eli who has never fallen for any particular woman, realizes that Ray is what he has been waiting for his whole life. The sexual tension and physical attraction, as well as, the verbal sparring make this a fun read. It definitely is not along the same line as other Lori Foster novels, but it is worth picking up to read and stands on its own. It is acutally going to join my other Foster books on the keeper shelf. A few of her other novels that were wonderful were "The Winston Brothers", and any of the novels with the Buckhorn Brothers. Pick this one up and enjoy.

I have to disagree strongly with the readers who didn't like this book, or felt it wasn't up to Lori Foster's usual standards. Unexpected has action and a hot romance. More than that, I really like the character of Ray, a woman who has never felt 'normal' or that she fit in with the rest of the world. Imagine her distress at finding herself pregnant, soon to be responsible for the care and rearing of a child. Ray's love for her unborn child is matched only by her insecurities and makes her a likeable and sympathetic character. Lori Foster has never, IMHO, let a reader down, and Unexpected is no exception.

Adventure and Romance all in one............................,

This review is from: Unexpected (Paperback)
Eli is looking for a rough and tumble mercenary who can rescue his brother out of Central America before they kill his brother. He never expected Ray to walk in the door, a beautiful couldn't get her confused with a mercenary even if you tried woman. She had millitary experience and had done this before; rescuing americans from kidnappers.Ray wants to keep things very business like since she can sense the chemistry between Eli and herself and she doesn't need any complications but Eli has other ideas. Once in the jungle one thing leads to another. Now that they have taken care of all their business in Central America something unexpected has happened and Ray and Eli have to work it out. I really liked this book. It definitly lives up to a Lori Foster novel. The characters are very well developed and have lots of depth. This book has several twists and turns once the rescue and sex takes place. Romance waites for them in the states read the book and find out what. Very warm book with lots of things to keep you going..

This is one of my favorite Lori Foster books; the heroine rocks, and the hero is no pushover. Her charactor development is excellent. I think perhaps that the heroine is so totally self-sufficient and competent that a majority of 'romance' readership feels no kinship with her - I did. My only regret about the book is that I was stupid enough to loan my copy to my sister, and will never see it again.
