Book Description

Hannah Hoffman Clark is the spirited young wife of Denver City’s only preacher, Frank Clark. After arriving by wagon to the howling wilderness of the unexplored west, they settled on land, built a home, and began what they thought would be a long and prosperous life together. After an accident leaves Frank without feeling in his legs, the dream of self-sufficiency suddenly slips away, but even more tragedy is on the horizon for Hannah.

Once widowed, she struggles to cope with her loss, relying on those her husband had hired, especially Nathan Weaver, a no good gambler and drunkard. While the tenuous hold she has on her sanity crumbles, her connection with Nathan becomes something far greater than she could have ever imagined, but her family would be scandalized if she married such a man.

One should never judge a book by its cover, and Nathan, although rough around the edges and crude, has his heart in the right place, and it belongs to Hannah…if only she could see it.

This is the first book in The Colorado Brides Series, chronicling the lives of the Hoffman sisters and their adventures in finding love out west.

Look for:

An Unexpected Widow

An Unexpected Bride

An Unexpected Annulment

An Unexpected Mother

An Unexpected Love

And The Arizona Brides Series will be available in the fall of 2013.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 star writing skills July 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What I LOVED about this book:

the author sucked me into the characters from the very first page. Each and every one is well rounded and unique. I loved the playful banter between the man and wife, this kind of writing 'shows rather than tells' us their personalities so right from the start it felt like I knew them. She loves her husband and the reader does too which is why 'what happens' is so traumatic.
I won't be spoiling it (cos you know from the title what happens) but the emotion portrayed is raw and gutsy; the first half of the book my heart was in my throat. I like a book that can trigger emotion from the reader. I want to CARE what happens to the characters and I did.

What I DIDN'T like about the book:

I thought that the intimate interaction between husband and wife was borderline smutty. While not neccesarily explicit I suppose if you were to give it a TV rating it would be a strong PG-13 (but that being said I would not recommend this book to 13 year olds, the subject matter is just too mature). I am told that the next two books in the series are not like this so I'll let you know. :)

Also, some things just didn't seem right for the time. It seemed strange to me that the female lead wouldn't consider a farmer as a potential 2nd husband (because of her social standing- but this was the WEST and she had a FARM to look after so who cares about social standing) and then she acts contrary to her 'proper upbringing' by risking her reputation on several occasions. I was puzzled.

And a word in general:

One little pet peeve.. (and I'm not just picking on this author, it seems like every western book has it) what is up with the smell of perspiration being a turn on?

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected Pleasure June 16, 2013
By Sabrina
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had the unexpected pleasure of reading a first work by Carre White. This story about the first of four sisters to make her way to Denver City is an original attempt to capture the atmosphere of an era of settlement, while examining relationships forged during that era. The hazards of frontier life, the changing times, and the flux of events and their effects on frontier men and women are treated with plausible situations, characters and dialogue. In addition to action scenes, there is realistic detail and common sense lessons that emerge from the actions and dialogue of the characters. Ms. White, through her believable characters and realistic dialogue captures the essence of the Christian work ethic. She also combines this with an effective handling of the emotional attraction between the main characters. Denver City has it all: a saloon, a parlor house and a church. The problems of alcoholism, prostitution and isolation are handled with a light, non-sermonizing touch, and the resolution of the new widow's crisis is a testament to the frontier community mentality and the strong and flexible frontier woman. I look forward to reading Ms. White's Unexpected series and expect that she will expand on this innovative and original depiction of the settling of Denver City.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story -- but would change a couple of things.... August 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great story. As one reviewer said, the author sucks you in to the characters and story line right away. There is no reading a lot of pages before you can even get interested. The only thing I would change would be the (what some folks might not even consider off-color language) curses in the book. I don't think they need to be there, and to me, it makes me not want to read anything else this author writes. However, one reviewer did say the others in this series are different. So, I might try one more. I know there will never be another Janette Oke, but she was able to tell stories that were every bit as awesome and she did not have the need to use this kind of language. This is the first novel I have read in a very long time. It is a good one, as I said, and if you are not put off by the language (and there is not a lot of it) then you will truly love this book! Oh yes, I also agree with the reviewer who mentioned the perspiration being a turn-on. I do not think that is realistic. Maybe it is because I never lived in the old west! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Never EVER should be in the Christian book section!!! October 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a dreadful book for the Christian book section: it was NOT, definitely NOT, Christian in nature. Only thing I can figure out was that the husband was a pastor so it made it "Christian"-NOT! It was sexual and adulterous from the beginning. I didn't finish it so don't know if it turned out "Christian" or not, but would guess not.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Christian romance!! August 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Why was this book in the Christian fiction section? When I read Christian books I don't want to read about sex. Someone said it wasn't explicit content. Maybe PG-13. Well, I'm here to tell you not to read this book if enjoy clean, Christian romance!

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT CHRISTIAN September 28, 2013

If you're looking for CLEAN clean CHRISTIAN fiction this is NOT the book for you. The intimacy between man and woman is too detailed!! Also there is use of profanity. Making one character a preacher does not make it Christian.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too much explicted sexual references. September 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't like the sexual innuendos in it and feel it's not meant for a Christian based fiction. Very disappointed in it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Christian fiction? Hardly! September 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The reason I gave this book 1 star is that I downloaded it thinking it was a wholesome book with a biblical Christian vviewpoint...understandable, I think, since it is in Christian Fiction. I wish I had read some of the other reviews first; then I would have realized that is NOT the case. There is not just one theme that goes against Christian principles but several, lusting after a man while being 'happily married' to another being just one of them. So although the author's writing itself is not horrible, this book did not deliver what I thought I was getting.
