Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Can’t wait to hear about the next Bigfoot sighting? Do you search the skies looking for UFOs? Or do you just find such phenomena fascinating to read about? If so, this is the book you’ve been waiting for. Clark, author of the multivolume UFO Encyclopedia (1998), has compiled this attractively priced paperback of paranormal sightings and activities from the U.S. and across the world, from ancient times to the present day. This work covers everything from sewer-dwelling alligators to the Yowie (an ape-man who purportedly has lived in Australia for more than 300 years) and is both comprehensive and engaging. What is most striking about the narrative is the straightforward way in which Clark depicts both the phenomena described and the people who have experienced them without any bias or dismissal of claims that are made. In other words, he treats these individuals as ordinary people who have undoubtedly witnessed something extraordinary that cannot be easily explained. By the same token, he is not afraid to call out hucksters and hoaxes. Overall, a very captivating read and a must for anyone interested in paranormal phenomena. --Sylvia Ashwell

"... wonderful compendium of strangeness ... This is one of those books you'll return to again and again for head-shaking accounts of how weird and wonderful this world can sometimes be."— About.com

"...a very captivating read and a must for anyone interested in paranormal phenomena."— Booklist Online

"Sometimes the medium is more valuable than the message, and that is true of this third edition of Unexplained! … hundreds of weird, wild, and wonderful accounts of everything from Bigfoot to snakes living in stomachs … Clark’s writing style is clear, dispassionate, and witty. … Recommended."— Choice

"Should warm the heart of any serious observer of the weird world in which we live. It will disturb doubters, scandalize skeptics, and readjust the realities of those whose tunnel vision has blinded them."— Fate magazine

"Jerry Clark is a treasure of the fortean world. … This is a very professional compendium of 64 selected topics from one of the field’s masters. … Clark also provides definitive investigations. ... It’s a critical (in all senses) book; get it, read it and be better informed for it."— Fortean Times

"Jerome Clack, is a fantastic writer and researcher ... A great new read chock full of data and stories that will give you a new perspective on our world."— Horrornew.net

"...fresh and eminently worthwhile in several respects: its particular coverage, the comprehensive detail of its bibliographic references, the high intellectual level of its analysis."— Journal of Scientific Exploration

"An excellent purchase for those curious about the curious."— Library Journal

"Unexplained! is a delightful book to curl up with before bed. Mr. Clark, who doubles as the [former] vice president of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, makes no judgments, and offers no compelling hypothesis … because after all … weird stuff … happens."— Real Crime Book Digest

The 2nd edition was so good that I've had three copies stolen from me over the years!
Kevin T. Hayman
I found the book fascinating to read as it covered many interesting subjects, UFO's, Bigfoot, sightings of animals that have long thought to be extinct.
Leanne Mckenzie
I love mysteries & always have, this is a book that takes almost every mystery you've ever heard of & puts it in one volume.

Rather than asserting that strange things lurk behind every tree and under every rock, or, at the other extreme, outright dismissing anything that does not appear to fit comfortably into the currently accepted model of how the world works, the author prefers to take a different path - one that lies somewhere in the middle. That is, he looks at the nature of the allegations and their sources, he dismisses the obvious hoaxes, frauds, dubious observations, publications resulting from sloppy journalism, etc., and considers the remainder as, at worst, unexplained and, at best, not entirely impossible, no matter how it conflicts with accepted orthodoxy.

The topics vary tremendously, e.g., hairy bipeds, various monsters, strange/extinct creatures, strange disappearances, things in the sky, civilizations underground, extraterrestrials, etc., etc.

The writing style is fast paced, clear, friendly, often tongue-in-cheek, occasionally humorous and quite captivating. On the down side, there are a few seemingly endless series of quoted descriptions of sightings of given creatures/phenomena/events that are very similar; I found some of these to be rather repetitive to the point of being monotonous. However, in general, I found this tome to be a most fascinating read with a very refreshing approach to the unexplained.

Lots of reprints from 19th-century newspaper hoaxes, and not too critical on the hard evidence front. Still, very fun to read (my favorite part is about the mermaids and the belled buzzard). The author presents strange reports without adding so many of the loopy explanatory theories that these books tend to have ("quantum energy parallel universe alternate portal aliens angels demons atlantis conspiracy" -- pick any three), and makes his point that whether or not strange creatures exist, it is possible to have strange experiences. He could have added a few more common-sense theories, but don't let that stop you. Pair this book with Oliver Sacks new book "Hallucinations", and you will be set for a long weekend.

I was extremely happy to see this book pop up as available for Kindle since I had the 2nd edition for years. The 2nd edition was so good that I've had three copies stolen from me over the years! I bought this so I'd never have it stolen from me again.

Honestly, this was almost a completely different book. There are entire sections removed and new ones added. A few of my favorite stories and accounts have been removed. The book no longer deals with UFO. Well, not as a subject unto itself. They're mentioned in articles where UFOs have been involved in some way, but the over all history of the UFO phenomenon has been taken out. Honestly though, what else is left to say on the subject?

Mostly, the new edition deals with subject matter of a more likely nature in many cases. It also divides the subjects into two clearly defined areas. Things that are possible and things that aren't. I like that personally.

While I did enjoy this edition, I felt the scope was much smaller and I was a bit disappointed by the narrower focus of subject matter. Don't let that deter you though. It's was a fantastic read and a good source book for information on the paranormal.

Jerome Clark's Third Edition of Unexplained! is the best of the trio. Get ready for non stop reading with Clark's unbelievable "in your face...factual...but freindly" writing style. His subjects range from a rock tossing brush in Tucson, AZ to Mr. Clark's own personal "weird" experiences with shadow beasts to "The Dover Demon". We liked it so much that we had to order an extra copy!

Please read the forward by Mr. Clark before reading the text. He explains why he excludes certain materials. He has been writing about these subjects for a long time and I doubt there is a more knowledgeable writer in the world. His material and knowledge on UFO'S is probably even greater. He is extremely level headed and balanced in his approach to each subject he writes about. It has always amazed me that an entire town can witness a weird event and traditional science and skeptics will "space it off" to mass hallucination or some other preposterous explanation; when at the same time hundreds of people have been put to death on the testimony of just one or two people.

Jerome Clark is the preeminent fortean writer and lecturer of our day. What I love about listening to him is the level-headedness he brings to the subjects he explores. With most of these writers you know their nuts five minutes into the book...or conversation. Listening to Mr. Clark is like listening to a police officer recount what he witnessed, or the findings of his investigation. He's just a no nonsense kinda guy. I discovered Jerome Clark through his Youtube videos. The History of Flying Saucers being my favorite, it's a group of scientists and retired military men discussing the subject.

Jerry Clark writes the very best books in this genre not simply because he has an open mind and a critical and piercing sensibility, but because he's simply a great writer. Just reading the introductions to any of these books should tell you how true that statement is. His many works are, and will always be, the very best on on his chosen subject. The content is always intelligently presented, and his writing is a pleasure to read. You simply can't go wrong buying any Jerome Clark authored book.
