I read this book because I was interested as a sports fan and enjoy biographies in general. I got so much more out of it. Reading about Kim's family struggles and especially the step by step guide she gives at the end to confronting difficult family members was life changing.

Never give up on hope, dreams, faith,
This review is from: Unfavorable Odds (Perfect Paperback)
I agree that this is a must-read for anyone that doesn't believe that any circumstance may be overcome by perseverance, determination and the power of Love. Kim's story allowed me to experience, through her words, a childhood that was painful yet filled with purpose. She's a living testimony for any young athlete or teen that, against all odds, you can still succeed. The book is rich with life lessons for any age, income level or ethnicity. I highly recommend it!

I bought this book because I was a gymnastics fan and was familiar with Kim's career. I was not expecting this book to be as good as it was. Amazingly there is so much more to this book then just Kim's gymnastics career.
Kim was born in to a difficult situation with a father who was only a part time father. The area in which she lived was unsafe and Kim was exposed to drug use at a young age. To make things even more complex, Kims parents had very little money and did not have a car. In addition, her coaches were less then supportive. Despite all of these challenges, Kim was a world class gymnast and an excellent student. This book has shown me that with hard work and faith, dreams can come true.

This book is about coming OUT of the dark,

Have to disagree with the above review. I thought the book was an honest, riveting account of Kim's life, which included her socio-economic struggles. I believe the message here, is that no matter what trials and tribulations life throws at you, they can be overcome. To me, that's about as positive as it gets! I found the book to be an inspirational must-read for anyone considering a life as an athlete.

Somewhat depressing as Ms Anthony dwells on her race, parents marital problems, being poor, personal insecurities though out the book. Not something for young gymnasts to read.
