Kind of a letdown,

As a major, long-time Kiss fanatic, I was excited when this CD popped up in my recommendations. I'm a bona fide completist, so I knew I had to get my hands on anything related to the late, great Eric Carr. His drumming was so ferocious, so powerful...it was exactly what Kiss needed to propel their sound forward as they searched for a non-makeup identity. By all accounts he was a genuine and gentle soul, and his premature death was crushing. Despite all that, however, I found this collection to be something of a letdown. It's a mishmash of covers written by Eric over the years, plus barely-listenable demo recordings and snippets of dialog used to "introduce" many of the songs. The liner notes were great, and I understand that the source material for some of these recordings has deteriorated beyond today's exacting standards...but I still feel like most of this stuff could have been posted to YouTube as a kind of gift to Eric's fans. For me, the two standout tracks were "Shandi," which was apparently used at Eric's 1980 audition to determine his vocal ability (an element of his musicality that I feel was always shunted aside...and when he WAS allowed to sing, it appears that he was encouraged to "sound like Gene," when in fact he's closer to Paul's timbre). "Shandi" as presented here is Eric's vocal track put over a new, low-key and groovy accompaniment. The other great track is "Dial L for Love," which is a powerful song even though it lacks vocals here. You can almost imagine what the melody line might have been, though; it's a strong track. Otherwise, I feel like this was an effort of love on the creation end that kind of goes over like a lead balloon on the consumer end.

I became a KISS diehard two years after Eric's very untimely death, so I unfortunately missed out on the whole Eric Carr experience. Needless to say, I'm very grateful to be able to be a part of all the posthumous Carr endeavors that continue to take place, including this excellent album. Damn good stuff. R.I.P. Eric Carr.

A friend of mine told me about this album. It is a great tribute a must have for any Kiss or Eric Carr fan. It has stuff Eric wrote right down to the end. Track 11 tells it as it was. It's a rockin tune.
