What an amazing read. I am not a big reader but I had this finished in just a few days. Dex really makes you feel like you are crossing the USA with him. At times it can be tiring but its overall a really inspiring story! Must read for any cycling fan.

I started this book on a Friday afternoon and finished it before the weekend was over. Sure, I love cycling and am fascinated the extremes endurance athletes push themselves to in pursuit of their goals. However, I was struck more by the supporting cast. A whole crew of people put their lives on hold to make it possible for this amazing athlete and ordinary guy to have another chance at a race that crippled him physically and psychologically the year before when he was unable to finish. They stood by him in the face of his suffering and his treatment of them, questioning themselves in the process (including a wife of 40 years who was as much a part of Dex's success as he, struggling to keep it together in the last miles as she feared for him). As a reader, I found myself wondering why they kept going, why anyone would submit him or herself to almost two weeks of physical and mental agony, but as the story unfolded I got a little glimpse into the motivations of people who step outside of their normal lives in pursuit of something greater. I couldn't help but to be inspired all of the people in this book.

The world of extreme sports is one that most of us will never know. What drives these people to not just prepare and train for it, but to suffer emotionally, physically, and mentally? In "Unfinished Business," Dex takes us through the emotional roller coaster of life as a RAAM cycler -- the high points, the low points, the supporters, and the destroyers. This is "the good, the bad, and the ugly" side of Extreme Sports. But somewhere in there, we get to know Dex, and it becomes our race, too. We get to know his crew, and what drives them to be helping a crazy cyclist bike across the country in 12 days. We start to see that, in life, everyone has another hill to climb and another challenge to meet. Thanks Dex, for sharing your inspiring story!

Loved the book. See my review of Lisa Good's Journey of Suffering. I enjoyed reading the two different perspectives of The Race Across America.

It is a great book that tells a story of someone (Dex Tooke) who just does not accept to quit, despite a heartbreaking failure at his first try at the Race Across America, a non-stop 3,000 miles bike race from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. In his book, Dex does not hide anything, from the brutal toll that RAAM does to his body, to the not-so-cool mood-changing due to sleep deprivation, that goes from being the super nice guy to being a complete jerk. His raw, honest, and sometimes very emotional account of his odyssey makes this book absolutely riveting, and as the saying goes: you can't put it down as you want to know what's going to happen next.

Finally Dex Tooke, like the olympian Dara Torres and many other athletes, proves once again that age is just a number!

Well done Dex!!!

I recently had the opportunity to meet Dex at the end of an ultra marathon ride across the state of Texas. Even though I was familiar with RAAM and also an avid cyclist I never thought I'd have the opportunity to meet a world class athlete in person.

Well this guy is for real, just amazing. His book is an excellent story of the mental and physical suffering of what one would have to go through to complete RAAM. Also in the book are details of how important a supportive and experienced team is behind a racer who is competing in RAAM.

Dex thanks for living and sharing your story, the book was a great read! Go Dex go!!!!

I just finished this book. As a weekend warrior cyclist I am absolutely awestruck that a 61 year old man could tame the 3000 mile beast of RAAM in 12 days. To say this story is awe inspiring would be a understatement of monumental proportion. The sheer volume of effort and unbending determination it took for Dex to accomplish this feat is mentally and emotionally staggering. Reading this book is like being on the ride. The ups...the downs...the disasters...the losses and the inevitable victory will have you laughing, crying and simply astonished.

Dex describes in detail all of his struggles in his second attempt to finish the Race Across America (RAAM). Anyone who has ever wondered what it is like to participate in ultra cycling will get a true picture in this book. Dex is brutally honest in his descriptions of the race and himself. For a great companion to this book, try A Journey Of Suffering, a description of his rookie attempt by one his crew members.
