Dean Brown is truly a veteran of electric jazz/fusion scene, who's played A LOT with the greats like Bill Cobham, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn (you name it!) and who is one of the most sought-after session guitarist in this musical sphere. So, no introduction is needed, really. But Dean is not at all just a session musician. His three previous critically-acclaimed records (Here, Groove Warrior, and DBIII) present a beautiful collage of creativity, freedom, artistic virtuosity, and tasteful production. His latest record "Unfinished Business" takes all of the above a step further, though. On this record you hear much more of the Dean you see live (compared to his first two records) - lots of extended soloing, group improvisation, and only occasional overdubs and additional arrangements (NB.: even the horn arrangements have a "live" feeling). Whilst there is a common ground to all the tracks on the record, the diversity, which everyone who knows Dean at all must be used to, is felt through and through. My experience with Dean is that every time I think I heard him at his best, he brings out more. Now, I'm left to wonder as to what's next, because this record is truly breath-taking.
