This review is from: Unfolding Pictures: Fans in the Royal Collectio (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful fan book and should be on the shopping list of an fan collector or lover. The Royal collection in the UK has displayed in this book a series of fans collected by, or made for, the royal family over the previous three centuries. They range from a home painted brise fan made for Queen Alexandra to top flight examples of craftsmanship given as gifts on foreign visits. As might be expected, there are some wonderful 18th century examples collected by Queen Mary and somewhat surprisingly a very early 16th century fan collected as having a connection to King Charles 1st. The fan photos are all full colour, and what background is known of the fans origins are all explained along with the relevant family history where it relates to the fan. This is a beautiful book that is a pleasure to read through and admire the fans that have been made available for this exhibition in the UK - even if you can't get to the exhibition (like me) this book is as close as you can get in print format. |
