5.0 out of 5 stars I foresee awards...Marvelous! October 1, 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Alexandra "Alex" Huntington had loved Bryceson Wakefield, the Fifth Duke of Hawksworth, since childhood. She knew he married her to care for his relatives, freeing him to join the war against Boney. She never expected him to leave only moments after their vows had been spoken though! When she received word Bryceson had been killed at Waterloo, it was up to her to care for his nieces, his uncle, and her own aunt. Hard to do, since Bryceson never provided for them in case of his death! Everything went to his cousin, Baxter, who cast the lot of them out and began spending his new fortune. A year after her husband's reported death, things became desperate. Alex made a bargain with Judson Broderick, Viscount Chesterfield. She would marry him if he would pay off all debts. Judson kept the bargain. He paid everything. Yet in the church, only seconds before Alex said "I do", her deceased husband walked into the church to claim her!
Bryceson was horribly scarred, inside and out. As he and Alex courted, the Ton had called them Beauty And The Beast. He had been the golden one. She had been the plain one. As he claimed his wife, Bryceson could not help but notice their roles had been reversed. While he had been away, Alexandra had become a beauty! Feeling she deserved better than he, Bryceson planned to give her an annulment. However, not until his childhood nemesis, Chesterfield, had married elsewhere. Until then he would keep his hands to himself, no matter how hard that would be. What he did NOT expect was for his wife to set out to seduce him! <P...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another war-wounded peer who needs love and healing March 14, 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Alexandra has loved Bryce all her life. To Bryce, she was his childhood shadow always following him around and getting him into trouble. In a last (and futile) effort to gain his father's approval and respect, Bryce honors his father's deathbed request to go and fight Napoleon. But before he leaves, he decides to marry Alex so that she can take care of his family (two nieces and uncle) while he is gone. He leaves immediately after the vows are exchanged without a wedding night or staying for the reading of his father's will. He should have stayed for that one, since the will stated that if Bryce married Alex (his father disliked and disapproved of her), he would lose everything but his title.
Alex does all she can to care for the family, tossed out by the new heir when Bryce is reported killed in action. They move into Alex's run-down family manor but need money. After grieving for a year, Alex agrees to marry Viscount Chesterfield for financial security. But the ceremony is halted by a disheveled, limping, bearded Bryce seemingly back from the dead.
Yes, he's back but for how long? Though he claims her from Chesterfield (his nemesis) he plans to annull their marriage and set Alex free to marry a man she can love. She deserves better than a dispirited, broken man like him. As he discovers what she's had to deal with in his absence he becomes increasingly ashamed of himself. He's returned, but has nothing to offer her - no money, no estates only his loser self.
If only he knew that she has never stopped loving him. But she won't show him that because she is still smarting from the fact that he waited a year to tell her that he was alive. She decides to teach him a lesson by seducing him and then walking away. See how he likes being left!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Reviewer February 8, 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Beauty resides where gentleness and love are the wondrous of gifts . . .
Alexander `Alex' Huntington was moving on with her life; she stood before the altar to pledge herself to another. A year had passed since she had been widowed when her husband died on the battlefields of Waterloo. Her thoughts were haunted by the love she felt for her first husband, who she had loved since childhood-a love that was never returned. She was shocked when she saw a limping stranger slowly making his way towards the altar. There was something familiar about the newcomer that made her heart beat faster. When she heard a voice from the past declare that he was her husband come back to her from the dead, she felt herself go faint. Had her thoughts of her beloved been turned into a reality?
Bryceson Wakefield, Duke of Hawksworth had returned from the war a changed man. No longer did he possess the golden looks that had once made him the catch of London's elite society. His face and body exhibited hideous scars that were a daily reminder of what he had suffered that ill-fated day when he was given up for dead. He felt that his scars make him unworthy to claim his husband's rights to his beautiful wife. Although he felt he was not worthy of his wife, he refused to allow her to marry an enemy, the Viscount Chesterfield. Stopping the wedding ceremony was his only option. Seeing the beautiful swan his wife Alex has become in the year they had been apart only heightened his awareness of how beastly he must appear to her. Secretly he vowed to one day release her from the commitment that bound them together. Only his heart knew of the magnitude of his love for her, a love that did not become apparent to him until he lay so close to death.

More About the Author

Dear Readers,

Thank you! I'm officially a New York Times & a USA Today Bestselling Author.

Writers have many dreams for their careers, not the least of which is to have their books hit those lists. But it came as a delightful surprise, 2 days after surgery, to learn that JACOB'S RETURN, a book of my heart, hit that coveted milestone in its second release, fifteen years after the first. Many thanks to you, my wonderful readers. for making it possible. For those who are not familiar with the story, JACOB'S RETURN is a SEXY Amish Historical Romance, though no Amish writing rules existed when the book was written in the late nineteen-eighties. Now sexy Amish Historicals have become something of a trademark. My dedicated readers want the love scenes.

Meanwhile my New York Times Bestselling Mystery Series increased by one. TULLE DEATH DO US PART, my 6th Vintage Magic Mystery brought more notes and email than ever. I love hearing from you, so thank you so much. Your words delight and encourage me. Thanks too for your reviews, for telling your friends & posting your enthusiasm on social sites. Nothing is as valuable as word of mouth. Thank you for mentioning my work. A writer can't succeed alone. I could never succeed without you.

It's been nearly eight years since I left my job as a Development Director at a New England Prep School to become a full time writer, and I am still loving the heck out of it. I will admit that my knee replacement surgeries interfered with my creativity in 2013. I had one in March and one in September. Your cards, good thoughts, vibes, white light, & prayers, are much appreciated.

I didn't always know I wanted to be a writer, but I discovered Jane Eyre soon after I got my first library card. I was eleven and already giving every story a romantic spin, whether it called for one or not. In high school, I wrote romances about my friends and their boyfriends. Racy stuff for which their mothers did not thank me. That was my single true rebellion as a teen, and I'm so glad I ran with it. Because over-achieving, goody-two-shoes have no fun.

When my children were young, I jotted plot ideas on corners of envelopes, recipe cards, and such, and threw them in my nightstand. One day, I picked one and started writing. I have since journeyed to Regency England; 19th century Amish America; twenty-first century Salem, Massachusetts; Newport, Rhode Island; and Mystic, Connecticut; falling in love and solving mysteries along the way. I created a host of sassy, sexy witches who tantalize and torment the men in their lives. Hopefully, those men and women, witches and rogues alike, will make some happy magic for you.

I've re-released: The Rogues Club, a Multi-Award-Winning series of Regency Historical Romances. UNDENIABLE ROGUE, UNFORGETTABLE ROGUE, UNMISTAKABLE ROGUE & UNTAMABLE ROGUE. They're Unputdownable, as are: SEA SCOUNDREL, CAPTIVE SCOUNDREL, PROPER SCOUNDREL & HOLY SCOUNDREL.

Many of you have asked me, "What's next?" To get through a recovery that can be depressing--pain and physical therapy are a drag--I gravitated toward a Contemporary Romantic Comedy Series with a touch of Magic. It's filling my creative well, making me laugh, and keeping me working. You can expect WISHING WELL WEDDING (tentative title) in the first quarter of 2014.

Happy Reading, Happy New Year, and much love,
