More About the Author

As a nine-year-old, Karen Sandler was a horse-crazy kid with an over-active imagination. When that pony she begged for didn't appear on Christmas morning, she wrote about horses in poetry and stories. It took until she was an adult to both buy her first horse (the very unladylike Lady) and see her first book published. Since then, she's sold seventeen other books. In addition to writing novels, short stories and screenplays, she loves riding her beautiful Andalusian/Morgan mare, Belle (who is very ladylike). She lives in Northern California with her husband, Gary, and three cats--pleasingly plump Tenka, formerly feral Zak, and cranky diabetic Casper. Years ago, our family was on a camping trip in Northern California. We'd taken something away from my older son (a video game, maybe? I don't remember) and had locked it in the glove box. A determined kid, my son managed to get the glove box open, but he broke the lock in the process. Which meant he had to buy us a new lock.

A replacement from the car dealer was exorbitantly expensive, more than my son's modest allowance could afford. So we decided to trek down to the local "pick-and-pull" wrecking yards. We spent a couple hours wandering the lots, passing one totaled car after another. Sometimes we'd look inside and see what had been left behind--fast food wrappers or a ball cap, or even toys. It was a hot July day, but it gave me a chill thinking about who had been the occupants of those cars when the accident happened. Did they survive uninjured? Could someone have possibly been killed?

That visit to the pick-and-pull planted the seed of an idea in my mind. It sprouted roots and with time, it eventually developed into a full-fledged book featuring teen sweethearts, Laura and Johnny, who died in a 1955 Ford Fairlane. The book was originally published in 1999 by Berkley/Jove for their Haunting Hearts line. This is an updated edition.

Widow Kyra Aimes runs a nearly bankrupt wrecking company in the Sacramento Valley. To her amazement, Kyra legally ends up with a vintage 1955 Ford Fairlane. This makes no sense since there is no reason why the owner would sell it so cheaply to her.

When his parents died, Random Bolton frugally traveled the country, doing odd jobs in order to send money to his younger sister, Rachelle. She no longer needs his cash, only his visits, but he rarely comes home to see her, her spouse, and his two nephews. Random is working for a minor movie company, seeking cars to be used in a picture. He is mystically drawn to Kyra's lot. Random and Kyra are immediately attracted to one another and begin to fall in love. These feelings remain unwanted as neither one can handle them. However, two teenage ghosts, Laura and Johnny, not Tommy), tied to the Fairlane need this mortal couple so they can find eternal bliss together. Will supernatural interference and love be enough to overcome past demons?

UNFORGETTABLE is a strange but lovely contemporary romance that contains supernatural elements. All the characters (lead, secondary mortal, and secondary spectral) are fully defined with much depth to them.
