when I first heard this record,I thought thatschenker was changing his guitar sound to a more dark side, but the more I heard it,it just grew on me,now I think its a super great record kind of like asault attack or something like that, schenker once again reinvents himself and his sound.great record

Schenker /Keeling,,,way cool...he didn't really work w/ the Norum project. A Wanna be Schenker clone,,,It is a very vocal record,,,all about the lyrics and songs.. some great classic Schenker of course.Doesn't sound like he is trying to excel but he sounds like Michael,, He is great here as well as the band,,although I think the production lacks .badly,,,,adats?I will get the Live one I bet it smokes the studio versions,,,,Fat city is really cool...TOWER<<,that melody stays with me all day ,,drives me nuts..Rude Awakening is a great one .I relate to the lyrics. Great Vocal...I hope there will be another one w/ the two of them,,grown together,, if you are reading this guys ...Thanks..

Great - but took a while to really grow on me,

Ignore the 4 stars - I would now give this 5 stars after several listens.
This MSG effort is closest in style to the one that preceded it - namely Written in the Sand. At first I thought I was listening to a dud album, but it grew on me greatly the more I listened to it. What I like about Schenker is the complexity of his music. With every other guitar player I eventually get bored, but with Schenker's music I get more and more interested. He is the greatest rock guitarist in history in my view. Sometimes he can layer four or five complementary styles in a single track. He does not always give me what I want, but something else which I grow to realise is better than what I initially wanted. In a way, Schenker is somebody who actually corrects our expectations and tastes musically. I think Written in the Sand is slightly better, but comparisons with other albums are perhaps misplaced because of stylistic changes. If you are into Schenker, then I would definitely buy this album. If you are not into Schenker, then you need to give him a chance to cultivate your musical tastes in unexpected directions.

A great album for road trips,

I put off buying this album for years because of it's experimental nature. My buddy played it for me once back when it first came out and I was underwhelmed. Definatley not the classic song structure of MSG and the songs lack the bombast of his better known tunes. The music is not riff or lead based like typical MSG tracks, but rather is groove oriented. For those of you who bought the excellent instrumental "Dreams and Expressions" album, you understand the above description. I fell in love with this albums predecessor, "Written In The Sand" and was initially VERY dissapointed with this change in musical direction. Thankfully, my tastes have matured enough that I can now enjoy this underrated gem. While the albums flows pretty seamlessly, there are a couple of tracks that do stand above the others. The melody line in "Hello Angel" is positivly addicting, and it is a shame it was never played live. Not heavy enough, I suppose. "Pilot of Your Soul" was played live and is another one that gets you on the first listen. Thankfully, there are no fillers here and if you have an hour or so drive ahead of you, this album will keep you great company.

this is a great cd!ive had it now for a couple years and never really played it that much..but this one grows on you ,its been in my cd player for the past couple days..and its keeps getting better with each listen.M.S.tickels all the right places in a guitar players ear,its filled with those schenker classic licks!!the only downside of it (at first) is the singer sounds like david coverdale?well thats not so bad if you think about it..and after youve heard it a couple times that isnt formost in your ears...so i rate it 4 stars cause i think his first four albums are 5 star classics, but this is a close second and is the cd we have been waiting for him to make since built to destroy.

I have had this cd for almost a year now and it gets better and better. As schenker fans, we all expect every release of his to be a rocket that propels guitar playing to the next level. Every solo to be uncommon and brilliant, each its own masterpiece. This is why so many people have panned this cd. I was the same when I first cranked it up. But the more I listned the more I relized that this cd is great as it is at least, some new music from a great musician. Not his best. but its schenker. If you listen to the current crop of rock bands and guitarists that are being played on the airwaves these days then you have to say that this is one of the best cds of 99. It rocks hard, and it is tight. I do think that it was a bit rushed and suffers from a lack of polishing. Even so it crushes almost anything else that was released last year in rock. That alone gives it the merit of at least being part of my listning rotation. If you are a rock fan I am sure that it will be a part of yours as well.

This is an album that will grow on listeners after a few sessions-Schenker took the hard road here, avoiding unnecessary hooks and radio-friendly tunes. The songs display incredible prowess on the part of this legendary guitarist showing no signs of slowing down, but rather a certain refinement confirming once again-as if that would be necessary-his cult status.Without forgetting the rest of the band who are top notch,Kelly Keeling does justice to the material with his great range and uncanny ability to cover different vocal styles.

I reviewed this once before and gave it 2 stars but I'm still listening to certain songs on it: Illusion, Rude Awakening, turing off the emotion especially. Seeing in how I like certain songs on this cd it desreves a better rating..it took me a few listens to get used to it. It could have been better produced in some parts, however. Hello Angel could have been the best song on the cd but meanders around too much. Built to destroy took a few listens to get uesd to also..I still like most of it too...recently got it on cd after my tape bit the dust after years of play

MSG's Unforgiven straight out kicks a##!,

This review is from: The Unforgiven (Audio CD)
This is a must buy for every Schenker fan and every one who likes such kicka## bands like Deep Purple,UFO,Led Zeppelin, and early Van Halen.I bought tis album not knowing what to expect after the dissapointments of a few of the MSG previous albums, but was surprised by the great hard rock sons and the deepness of the album. This album is like a breath of fresh air, knowing that there are still bands that can kick a## still in a day full of teen-idol garbage! The best of the all around great songs on this album are Turning Off the Emotion,Hello Angel,The Mess I've Made, and Pilot of Your Soul. It's great to know there still is Rock and Roll and not just The Backsteet pretty boys,Jenifer(I can't sing live because I have no musical talent Lopez) or any of the other stir fried cr#p tats out there. I am still kicking myself because I didn't go see him live here localy a few months ago before I got the album...dam!

I'm one of the few here that wasn't an MSG fan before this disc -- I've followed Kelly Keeling as best I can since his days with Baton Rouge (a bit hard to do in the states). I had Baton Rouge's "Lights Out On The Playground" disc almost surgically implanted in my CD player for like two years back in the early '90s -- get it if you don't have it already! Lots of good memories come back listening to this one -- if you're reading, Kelly, thanks!
