5.0 out of 5 stars Their best album?, August 29, 2003

This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
This was the first Jawbreaker album I bought. I used to like it but then when I bought 24 hour and Bivouac, I kinda forgot this one. 24 hour is the most accesible and Bivouac is really particular, so perhaps thats why I got stucked with those two. But now, after being listening this band for some years I can say this one has something the others doesn't have. It's more honest, and imperfect, and that what makes it so good. Want is a great song, I don't agree with a review written here where the song is underrated just because is one of their popular songs. Not any pop punk band writes a song like Want. It's a song about relationship, love, but it's more than that. I think the point in the song is all the suffer happening inside one's brain. And the words are clever. Damn, few people can write lyrics like Blake does.
It's also their most punk album. And very angry, but not as sad as Bivouac. The addition of the Black and White ep is great. And well, the songs are all great, especially the first 6 or 7 songs in the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best debut punk efforts ever, August 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
Whenever Jawbreaker would play live a selection from there first cd "Unfun," it was guaranteed to drive fans ecstatic. Interestingly enough, on the second effort "Bivouac" Blake laments about having to play these same songs and they seldom did. These cd is raw, heartfelt, innovative and explosive. "Want" was an instant anthem and "Busy," although they no longer played it live, is classic - the lyrics are incredible. This is one of those cds you'll always be proud to own, and as far as punk rock debut records, this is on of the bests. Comprising of songs written around the days when Jawbreaker were NYU students, this is a remarkable, inspired effort.

This CD is perfect. Blake's brilliant. The CD is brilliant. In fact, everything Jawbreaker has ever put out is incredible, and this is their best true punk CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best work, September 4, 2007
By
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
I bought this album back in '91. I was very happy I did. It was a bit different than most of the stuff I'd been listening to at the time, a bit grittier and a bit less happy. But it grew on me over time and changed my musical sensibilities for the better. It's really a shame there aren't more bands like this... those who really do their own thing. The production quality on this one isn't as bad as some say... I think it's better than their next two albums in terms of picking out the musical subleties... and there's more of those on this album than on others. Like people say, you have your whole life to record your first album... and 18 months to record your second one.

Shout out to anyone who saw Jawbreaker and Face To Face play the Motley in Claremont. That was one hell of a show... only about a couple hundred people in an underground campus coffee shop. No stage. Too bad the Motley is gone now, but who cares I've long LONG since graduated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It!, March 5, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
JAWBREAKER....What else can I say?A great band and for many, their favorite album by the group. If you like jawbreaker just a little..get it.If your curious (after hearing a song or two by them)...get it.This is their first full length recording raw, relentless, and of course lyrical full-filling.
Not as "pop" as their later attempts but still as catchy.

5.0 out of 5 stars the greatest album of all time!, January 14, 1999
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
I first got exposed to jawbreaker through the pop punk sound of 24 hour revenge therapy. I liked it so later I bought this album (their debut effort). I was blown away! Blake's now departed raspy voice along with the quick guitar riffs bring an intensity unparrelled in any of his later efforts. Anyone who knows Jawbreaker knows that lyrically they are probably the best alternative music has to offer. This album comes before he strays into his obscure, sometimes overly poetic lyrics. Consequently it is my favorite, "I wouldn't want to be so cool in a world about to freeze, your so hard and brittle you shatter easily...Life's a race that I cant run, I curse the man who fired the gun. Concrete socks and cement shoes. The race was fixed I'm going to lose it. There's danger in a desperate man. Watch yourself I'm panicking. I know my time is almost done. Its now or never, never comes." Since I got this album about 4 years ago I have listened to it consistently and frequently and will probably always remain my favorite album of all time. If you like this album try Bivouac, their most underrated album. Also, Blake's new band Jets to Brazil (with the drummer from texas is the reason) is amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cynics would disagree, September 13, 2004
By
The Ricker "A to the X" (Oakland, CA. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
This is an awesome debut from one of the best bands in history, the songs are really catchy and smart. It's hard to find bands who are smart without being way too cynical or talking down to their audience. These guys can blend pop and punk almost perfectly. The nest example is probably "Want" and "SEEThruskin" is so freakin honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Equalized is overrated, September 18, 2000
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
Hmmm, My least favorite Jawbreaker set but the inclusion of the whack and blite is good. Should have thrown equalized in the mix and would have been great. Some fantastic songs such as Busy and softcore. Want is the bad teenage anthem that gets everyone into jawbreaker but then you find out later that they are much more than that soft pop punk sound of that song. Eye-5 makes me laugh everytime I hear it. When I saw the least favorite of Jawbreaker it is still one of my favorite albums ya dig.

4.0 out of 5 stars electric vomit, December 8, 1999
By
This review is from: Unfun (Audio CD)
I just bought this cd yesterday and, when I heard the opening notes of the song. I was like...umm I like this band! Blake has a good sense of melody and songwriting. I had not heard this band previous to buying this cd. Except the little song clips on Amazon.com. If those little song clips can impress me then you know this bands gotta be great.
