This review is from: The Unheard: 1934-37 Transcription Discs and Broadcasts (Audio CD)
Distributor of this disc, INTERSTATE MUSIC LTD. is a British-based outfit that produces its CDs in the Czech Republic.Six of the first eight tracks on THE UNHEARD XAVIER CUGAT are standard dance band stuff. All were dubbed from the same 16" transcription disc. "Mexicali Rose" features a bit of steel guitar. Cugat's violin solo highlights "I've Got You Under My Skin." All tracks contain a fair amount of surface hiss. Selections 9 -19, plus 23 were all recorded at a single session. This 16" disc is in far better condition, with no hiss and only occasional transient flaws. Exceptions are #16 and #17, which show evidence of damage throughout. Nilo Menéndez solos on piano after we hear his famous composition, "Green Eyes." Mrs. Cugat, Carmen Castillo vocalizes on a trio of tunes from this recording date. The final three cuts were possibly transcribed during broadcast. They don't have the clarity of the rest of this album but are still listenable. CONTENTS-- [2:22] Everybody Calls It Swing - v.
