I found Emma's life sad and her choices poor for herself and her children. It was clear that she did not know how to handle decisions. Her subsequent marriages also show a lack of understanding. A sad life but with a wonderful ending.
Why we do things and why we accept others, is not the point. We can argue that she should have just left. But how do we know what goes on in the minds and hearts of others? A good story.
Mitchell told the story with simplicity and clarity. A sad story of abuse, decisions, survival and victory with redemption.
