An important book about the politics of tragedy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Unheeded Warning: The Inside Story of American Eagle Flight 4184 (Hardcover)
Stephen Fredrick's book on flight 4184 tells an impotant story of international and domestic politics that far outstrip the concern for the publics safety.A true eyeopener, it shows that while the fedral government "deregulate" the airlines, the airlines still regulate the government. Shame on our government,Shame on AMR Corp. Read this book.

The book took a step by step aproach to the Roselawn disaster. It was very informative, and I couldn't put the book down. The author spoke through a pilot's perspective and let the reader feel every moment of the disaster. The details and aviation terms were explained fully by the author to let you understand them. The book explained why air safety is not at its upmost. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to know the story of American Eagle 4184. It is a definite 10.

For those who like to make informed decisions when they fly.,
This review is from: Unheeded Warning: The Inside Story of American Eagle Flight 4184 (Hardcover)
I always thought of myself as an informed flyer, but I was surprised to have my inherent trust of the FAA so profoundly shaken by this book. Stephen Fredrick combines his background as a pilot of the ATR series aircraft with a deep caring for the passengers & crew of the fatal flight of American Eagle 4184 to create a book that rivals many techno-thrillers. The book was published in 1996, and is a real cliff hanger since it came out before the legal settlement and crash investigation report were finally made public. The book got me so interested that I spent many hours searching the web pages to find out what decision the National Transportation Safety Board finally made concerning this airplane crash. I will certainly check to see if I am boarding an ATR whenever I fly in the future.

I just finished Stephen Frederick's detailed account of Flight 4184 and would like to note two major points that remain in my mind: first, thank god that he had the courage to step foward and tell the real story. And second, this story confirms 100% in my mind that the FAA is completely incapable of protecting the flying public as long as they are also in the job of promotion. This accident should never have happened. For once I hope the lawyers have a field day!!!!

The author of this book is obviously attached to the story yet his work seems to be very well balanced on a journalistic level. I have read many non-fiction works of late and found Unheeded Warning to be one of the most fascinating and riveting of any of my recent reads. When the author takes you inside the cockpit and cabin of the doomed airliner, you actually can feel your heart beat increase, your hands sweat and your mind race. Although the outcome is known and irrevocable, I found myself praying th

I just read "Unheeded Warning." I was moved...saddened and angered. I read the book in five days and staired at the ceiling the entire night after finishing it. I am sad for the families of those poor ignored people on that plane and am angry at the airline and the government for their reckless disregard of an obvious and preventable danger. Surely the NTSB needs autonomous power to not just investigate, but also to mandate change. Also, our legislators who claim, as usual, to represent us, should write laws allowing for the criminal prosecution of those who allow these most preventable tragedies to happen. Finally, I applaud Mr. Frederick's courage in knowingly risking his livelihood and life-long dream to speak out...he is an inspiration.

The book is filled with accurate information about how the politics at the FAA is once again responsible for unnecessary deaths of innocent, trusting passengers and crew. That is an old, recurring story about that worthless bureaucracy known as the FAA.
The one negative review above was obviously written by an ALPA pilot, who hates Fredrick because his book also criticizes ALPA for putting its self-interest political agendas before safety, as it has always done. I am grateful that Stephen Fredrick had the courage to put his concern for safety of the passengers, above the politically correct loyalty, which unions like ALPA demand from their members.

Sour Grapes from American Pilot Reviewer??,
By Milwaukee Reader (Milwaukee, Wisc) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unheeded Warning: The Inside Story of American Eagle Flight 4184 (Hardcover)
I have read the book and feel it is a very compelling story of tragedy resulting from corporate negligence. I remembered the general story of this flight when it happened and had no recollection of the way this disaster was handled by American Airlines. The book seems true to the factual accounts and is backed up by federal records.
I met Mr. Fredrick and know the passion that he has for passengers' rights and those of the families left behind after tragedy. This other yahoo who had negative to say about his motives seems to be venting sour grapes. I highly recommend the book!

Great book, but forgot something...,

Fredrick's book is great, very well written. But he left out one very important thing. Airplane is the safest way to travel long distances. Statistics show that you would need to take a flight every day for 35,000 years before being assured of being in a fatal accident, and even then chances are that you would survive. Mr. Fredrick barely mentioned the good points of the F.A.A. and N.T.S.B., and even though I'm not exactly an American Airlines/Eagle fan, they are one of the safest airline operators in the world.

I never thought when I picked up this book from my husband's desk, that I would be so intrigued. As I read each sentence, each paragraph, each page, I longed to know more, to absorb the essence of each of these people who should still be here today. Greed, or worse, incompetence, created the atmosphere for disaster and God bless this pilot for coming forward. I have heard American Airlines fired him after he spoke out and I think that is terrible. I will never fly that airline again. He is truly a her
