Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The spewing of vitriol, epithets and wild conspiracy theories suggest a collective nervous breakdown among liberals, according to conservative commentator Malkin who, in her latest book, makes no distinction between moderate and extreme liberals; everyone left of right is a nut who suffers from PEST-Post Election Selection Trauma. This syndrome, she explains, is democratic (small d), affecting stuffed-donkey clutching college students and seasoned congressmen and journalists whose overweening diatribes and hand-wringing Malkin has seized to illustrate an emotionally charged and irrational hatred of everything conservative. Malkin scoured blogs, speeches, media commentaries and even transcripts from Oprah for material, though she misses the boat in a number of instances, most notably in her obliviousness to sarcasm and irony, and she overextends her analytical prowess by offering shallow, shoddy critiques of theater, literature and modern art. Malkin uses extremist bloggers and airheaded celebrities as exemplars of the left, cherry picking the most egregiously tasteless examples of ill-conceived commentary or inflammatory behavior to bolster her case that liberals, as a whole, have gone off their rockers. Right-wingers looking for affirmation will enjoy.

From the Inside Flap

Un·hinged

adj : affected with madness or insanity; [syn: brainsick, crazy, demented, distracted, disturbed, mad, sick, unbalanced]

- The American Heritage Dictionary

*** Warning: Unhinged liberals are hazardous to the nation’s health.

They’re slashing your tires. Burning your lawns. Heaving pies at Republican pundits. Hurling racist epithets at minority conservatives. Nursing nutty conspiracy theories. And pining publicly for the murder of President Bush.

And they call us crazy?

In Unhinged: Liberals Gone Wild, Michelle Malkin plays conservative Margaret Mead to the alien political creatures of the American Left. With uproarious detail and rollicking reportage, Malkin chronicles the bizarre world of leftists gone mad in their natural habitats: the mainstream media, academia, Hollywood, and Washington.

Unhinged unmasks liberals who’ve completely abandoned rationality and reality. They’re taking chainsaws and bayonets to campaign signs. Running down political opponents with their cars. Setting fire to political opponents in effigy. Defacing war memorials. Swiping yellow ribbons off cars. And supporting the fragging of American troops.

In Unhinged, you’ll meet:

- The Top 10 Unhinged Leftists, Celebrities, Media Liberals, and Politicians. - The Pennsylvania Democrat who repeatedly screamed "faggot" at his Republican opponents on the Senate floor. - The Florida Democrat who tried to run down former Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris with his Cadillac. - The Democrat congressman who claimed the capture of Saddam Hussein was staged by GOP operatives to help the Bush re-election campaign. - The veteran newsman who claimed that Bush advisor Karl Rove and Osama bin Laden are working hand-in-hand to help the Republican Party. - And hundreds more unhinged liberals gone wild!

With wit, wisdom, and a bullet-proof vest, Michelle Malkin ruthlessly and raucously skewers the myths of liberal tolerance, peace, and civility. Unhinged shows how conservatives are driving their opponents mad. The good news for liberals? Self-help starts here.

It's fascinating to read the reviews of the people who hate Michelle Malkin and her book. The problem is, none of them are able to disprove what she says. And the book has extensive footnotes and links to her sources, so if you are sceptical, do the research yourself! I worked through the first two chapters and looked many of the references so I could see for myself. The frightening thing is not her opinions, but that the examples she gives to back them up are true!!! I would rank Michelle above Ann Coulter because Michelle did such a good job of backing up her arguments. Of course, some people will judge based simply on the fact that they hate her. But it's well worth it to look up some of the references and find out first-hand what's been going on with liberals in America these days, and to discover the disturbing truth that it's not just a few nut cases who are giving others a bad name, but very much a trend among Liberals and the Democratic party.

If the offensive and racist reviews have not been taken off....they were'nt at the time of this writting.....you can see many of the same derogatory remarks and name calling mentioned in the book. Theres another review that says even O'riely called her on things wrong with the book. I watched it...No he didn't. There even one reveiw that says they didn't read the book. If you want evidence of how true this book is then all you have to do is read the other reviews. Buy it and it will open your eyes. It is a fast and easy read.

There is little doubt that both the left and the right have their share of extremist views. Those who caterwaul from the right speak in a collective whisper and when they do, mainstream Republicans quickly distance themselves from it. And when the braying is from the left, the noise volume is elevated in both vile and crescendo until one can safely call them as unhinged. In UNHINGED, Michelle Malkin takes to task an entire political spectrum and mode of thought that is so focused on demonizing one man, the president, that they stand revealed as worthy losers of the last two presidential elections, and despite the current albatross of Iraq, can very well lose the White House for a third time.

Those who attack this thesis tend to fall into two categories. The first lies in personal attacks on Malkin's Filipina ethnicity. Malkin includes a sampling of emails that she receives on a daily basis, nearly all of which attempt to reduce her either to the stereotyped Manilla whore or goo goo girl who wants only to be a mail order bride. What I found disturbing was the evident intent of these writers of bile for their words to be taken quite literally. In the second category are those who say yes, the left does it have it share of unhinged loonies but this percentage is neither more nor less than what eminates from the right. Alan Combs, from Hannity and Combs, takes this position, but he, at least has the decency to distance his party from these scurrilous attacks. The problem with this sort of defense is that most of Malkin's examples are not taken from anonymous bloggers (although many in fact are) but instead come from mainstream democrats and Hollywood celebrities, nearly all of whom do far more than merely disagree on an intellectual plane with the policies of the president.

Michelle Malkin is rapidly becoming one of top ten bloggers with factual information that adds context to the bias of mainstream media. Her new book goes beyond exposing the bias, and focuses on the unfortunately not-so-isolated cases of liberals gone mad. Some of these barely made the papers, but taken together, they are instructive of a left that has taken on bullying ways to 'sell' its agenda. Obviously, none of this works, and is driving less 'passionate' democrats away enough to turn over the numerical advantage to self-confessed conservatives by about 2:1. And numbers like that only drive the left into even greater rage.

First let me say I am very disturbed, though not surprised, at many of the negative reviews this book has recieved on Amazon. This is not because people don't like the book; that is their privilege and I would hate to live in a country where everyone thought the same way.

It is sad how people attack Michelle personally and call her and those who like the book names. You may say, "doesn't Michelle and other conservatives do the same thing?" Not in the same way. When we attack liberals (with the exception of a few far-right loonies), we attack their beliefs and actions or statements. We give a reason, not just call names.

If you are going to call me a right-wing nut, a least tell me why? Michelle manages to write a book that is not as brash as those by Ann Coulter. She backs up her "name calling" with facts and gives reasons. She does exagerrate and go overboard on some things. But compared to so many liberals, she seems very moderate.

So if you want to write a one-star review of this book and call Michelle and other conservatives names....go ahead. But why not give a reason or two while your at it.

This book was inspired not only by the public statements of mainstream Democrats such as Howard Dean, Charlie Rangel, and their Hollywood cohorts such as Martin Sheen, Barbara Streisand, and so many others, but also by the personal attacks Michelle Malkin receives on a daily basis. Look at the comments on any discussion board, blog, or web based reviews open to the public and you will find vicious and obscene personal attacks on her. It is delightful that instead of blurbs on the back cover, she puts actual public comments and emails she has received (providing the real email addresses and URLs). Perfect support for her premise!

The author takes us on a tour of the popular and political culture of our times and demonstrates with simple quotes from the mainstream players in the Democrat and Progressive portions of our political spectrum how unhinged the left has become. With so many focusing on strange conspiracy theories, such as Bush being the creator of 9/11 rather than Atta and Al Queada, or the more than isolated calls for the assassination of Bush, to the fixing of the 2004 election using "mother machines" one has to wonder what's in the water they drink. Malkin has a great term for these kinds of thinkers: moonbats. I love that term.

While the right certainly has its extreme wing (you know, the people who see the Clinton's as the murderers of Vince Foster and the like), these are clearly fringe players. However, the people Malkin includes in this book are largely mainstream Democrats, Progressives, and Lefties. If you set up a balance and put in the moonbats from both the mainstream Dems and the GOP, which side do you think would tip it? I think it is not even close. The Al Frankens, Michael Moores, all of Moveon.
