Book Description

Gil Yates Private Investigator Novel, 7 February 2003
Contingency, high-priced investigator Gil Yates is at it again: This time, an offensive movie mogul has hired him to track down his wife and daughter, lost in the mysterious Techsci cult "religion". It seems the leader of this "religion" is hiding out in a high-security compound from the IRS and FBI. Gil plunges into his case, encountering embittered ex-Techsci’s and questionable followers. Infiltrating the compound, his life become more complicated as the wife and daughter won’t leave. What’s more, there are rumors that the successors of the "religion" are trying to kill off the declining Techsci leader. As Yates becomes more involved in the case, his own life is hanging in the balance, not to mention his elusive, exorbitant fee. Jailed and chained, he must play the enemy against each other to save his life, only to almost lose it. This seventh Gil Yates escapade has all the intrigue and humor his fans have come to expect.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

By day he's Malvin Stark, the nerdy connoisseur of 100-year-old cycads, but by night he's Gil Yates, a big-money private investigator with a knack for getting himself into very odd situations. This time Gil is hired by Hungarian movie mogul Lajos Bohem to find his wife and daughter, who have disappeared after joining a sect called Techsci--a broad-stroked parody of Scientology, complete with A-list celebrity members and a guru who writes best-selling self-help books. Though Gil's fee promises to be big enough, he learns along the way that he ought to keep his back to the wall when dealing with this crowd. On the other hand, the closer he gets to finding the women, the more Gil senses that they might have some very good reasons for not going back to "Mogul Bohem," as he calls his client. The Gil Yates series offers an always entertaining mix of comedy and mystery, with a quick pace and just the right amounts of irreverence and wit. Mary Frances Wilkens

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Critical Look at a Cult, September 12, 2008
This review is from: The Unholy Ghost: A Gil Yates Private Investigator Novel (Gil Yates Private Investigator Novel, 7) (Hardcover)
The Unholy Ghost by Alistair Boyle is a riveting story that will strike a cord in any reader, especially someone who has dealt with a cult in the past. The main character, in an attempt to rescue movie producer Lahos Bohem's wife and daughter from the cult Techsci, unfortunately falls into its grasp himself, and from the inside he can better tell what it really is like. Recommended for anyone, but especially students college-aged and older and fans of detective novels.
