Blows O.H.Z away,
By Jin Bay (Manchester) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unholy (Audio CD)
I've decided to write a review for this cd as no one else has bothered to, which is strange because 'Unholy' is (along with 'Takk') THE album of the year.
For those with no previous experience of Martin Grech, you're in for a treat. To be honest, even those who have heard Open Heart Zoo will be taken aback by this. Yes, it blows OHZ away, but it sounds so different to that effort. If that was influenced by radiohead then this is influenced by nine inch nails, GYBE! and Sigur Ros to name but a few. If that makes Grech sound like an imitist then you'd be wrong: he has created an album of such grandious, epic brilliance that it is a sound unto itself. Grech's incredible voice wails and fragments throughout, singing with such venom and emotion it's awe-inspiring. 'Guiltless' is a staggering opener. 'Erosion and Regeneration' is as haunting as it is wonderful. 'I am chromosome' is possibly the finest song here, five minutes of rock so powerful that it literally leaves you with goosebumps (the climax here is staggering). 'Holy father inferior' is a nine minute epic that captivates from start to finish. If 'Chromosome' is the pinicle of raw power and untapped energy, then 'Lint' is the very opposite, a song so quiet and delicate that you could hear a pin drop. The album then finishes with 'Elixir', a stirring climax to an outstanding effort. No, it isn't for everyones tastes. Some will find it too loud, others will find it too 'different' (E & R has Grech recite a poem as opposed to singing). However, whether you love it or hate it, it's something you will walk away from much richer for having experienced it, and THAT is surely the sign of a truly great album.

The most under rated artist of our time,

This review is from: Unholy (Audio CD)
Absolutely, hands down, the most brilliant, extraordinarily talented artist to come our way in a very long time.
He has the angelic vocal octave range of the legendary Jeff Buckley, its uncanny and haunting how much his voice compares to Jeff's. This record, though older, is addictive, mesmerizing, captivating and disorienting. I just never tire of hearing it. There are so many layers, and so much depth to Martin's music, your soul listens and responds and transports you to higher states of consciousness. Martin Grech's music is more than genius, its a sublime revelation, an epiphany of epic proportions, pure Ecstasy, a religious experience. |
