I've been waiting for years for a sequel to Dragon Precinct and here it is! The guardsmen are all back. The Unicorn Precinct is in the wealthy district. It's unusual to have any trouble at all, let alone a murder, particularly a murder of a young girl from a wealthy family about to marry into a banker's family. Her fiance just happens to be the cousin of the youngest and most straightlaced member of the guard. Throw in corruption and briberly of the guard in the Mermaid precinct and Torin's father showing up and demanding he return home to Myverin and it's quite a story. There's lots of action and insider fighting going on as well as a lot of character development. We learn a lot more about the guardsmen. While this could easily be read alone, for maximum enjoyment of the story, I'd read Dragon Precinct first.

I was very happy that the author has returned to the universe that he first gave us in "Dragon Precinct". The classic 'police precinct' formula with a medieval twist is applied here again in this book which is set a few months after the original. All the detectives are back and the story is very well told. I hope to see more entries in this series with a lot shorter time between installments. The author does a great job with characterization and plot here. If you enjoyed the first book (and if you haven't read it, you should) you'll enjoy this as well.
