5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - Caldecott Material
The imagery is this beautiful story are pure magic. Ive never seen anything quite like them. This is an absolute "must-have" for any child -anywhere! With the occasional, perfectly placed rhyme the story moves at a perfect pace. Unicorn lovers everywhere will rejoice in this wonderful creation!!

1.0 out of 5 stars The most grammatically atrocious book I've ever read
The idea is cute, but the execution is extremely disappointing. Take a look at the quote from the first page to get a look at what's in store. The book is filled with incorrect (or missing) punctuation, fragments, and run-on sentences. I'm honestly boggled as to how it was published as is, especially for children who are learning how to read and write properly. I've never...

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!, March 3, 2007
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
Warning to parents - only buy this book if you resign yourself to reading it every night to your child. The illustrations belong in an art gallery and the story is peaceful and moving. There isnt a "princess" in the world who shouldnt have this in their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book, March 2, 2007

This is a beautiful book with spectacularly vivid illustrations. I think that it will certainly capture the imagination of every child (especially little girls) who reads it or has it read to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Illustrations, April 6, 2007
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
Linda Crockett's magical illustrations create a comforting environment in which to escape from the pressures of reality. Unicorn Races is an enchanting story about a girl named Abigail who is transformed into a princess. As if in a dream, she is transported to a land of cookies and ice cream sundaes in a beautiful forest. The strawberry icing on the cupcakes looks delicious and everyone is eager to start the races so they can attend the party.

"In a flash, the six majestic unicorns quickly bolted from the clearing. Like a rainbow after a midsummer's shower, the colorful beasts stretched across the shadowy skyline. The princess watched in astonishment as they gracefully took flight."

As the unicorns race through the sky and run through the ocean waves, they finally run past the finished line and the party can begin.

This beautiful book features a padded cover, sturdy binding and page after page of lavender, rose and sapphire illustrations. The coloring used in the art creates a magical setting filled with sparkles like each page has been sprinkled with fairy dust.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Dreams, Indeed, March 16, 2007
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
A night hasn't gone by in nearly a month that our child hasn't pulled this from the stack to read. She is also inclined to use the post-story "quiet time" she has to thumb through the book herself. The story is sweet and captures the magical imagination of every young girl. Who hasn't dreamed of being a princess? spending time with the fairies and elves? The pastel illustrations add a lot to the story. It's nice to have a princess book that uses imagination, not television characters, to drive its fantasy. The book offers a fairy tale that princesses will love to hear over and over. Parental readers (who WILL be reading the book over and over) can easily change the color of the winning Unicorn, as the illustration doesn't segregate the winner from the crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little girl's best friend, November 6, 2007
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
This book is a wonderful story of a little girl whose imagination whisks her away to a fantasy land full of adventure and promise. The illistrations are terrific and full of detail. My grandaughters keep asking me to read it againg and again to them at night. The middle grandaughter,(5) "reads" it to her favorite stuffed animals. This book makes a wonderful present or just an anytime gift for your favorite princes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rainbow of Unicorns, March 3, 2007
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
Children love reading about Unicorns just like I did when I was younger..and I still do. This book of colorful Unicorns that race through the night while princess Abagail and the elves and fairies cheer them on is exciting and fun. The dream like colors of the night sky and the luscious banquet make you want to take your time to see the detail on each page but you also want to move ahead to see who wins the race. The expression on the winning unicorn's face is perfect. I won't give away who the winner is but I'm sure children will be guessing and picking their own winner as the story progresses. Dream on little ones.

The book is filled with incorrect (or missing) punctuation, fragments, and run-on sentences. I'm honestly boggled as to how it was published as is, especially for children who are learning how to read and write properly. I've never left a review before, but I felt compelled to mention it after seeing all the 4- and 5-star reviews. Is it truly possible that no other adult (especially the editor) caught this? I stumbled over the improper punctuation the entire time.

4.0 out of 5 stars SFC 4 star review, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Unicorn Races (Hardcover)
This is Stephen J. Brooks's fifth published title and it's one your children will cherish and love. The illustrations are brilliantly done with what look like water color backgrounds that offset the vivid illustrations of the characters by Linda Crockett, who has received several awards and honors for her illustrations in children's books.

Unicorn Races takes children into the magical world of Abigail's imagination as she travels to a marvelous feast for a princess. Abigail watches the elves and fairies make preparations for the Unicorn Races as unicorns in every color of the rainbow come to compete before the royal princess Abigail. When the race begins, unicorns fly through the night sky, circle around the moon, dance on the stars, travel to the ocean, glide inches above the waves, and zip around a lighthouse before returning to the magical clearing where Princess Abigail waits to announce the winner. After the feast, Abigail rides home on one of the magical unicorns and falls fast asleep until the next Unicorn Races.
