A Magnificent, Meaningful Deck,
By A Customer
This review is from: Unicorn Tarot Deck & Book Set [With Book] (Paperback)
This deck shows proud, magnificent unicorns on nearly every card and the artwork is wonderful! But even aside from the unicorns, the symbolism in these cards is perfect. In both the major arcana and the court cards, the beautiful figures are not shown in fixed, frozen positions as in so many other decks. Instead, they are in lifelike positions, drawn in such a way that one can see the meaning of the card at once. I love this deck!

More than just Unicorns,
By The Pope (The Vatican) - See all my reviews

Although many people who would buy this set may do so as a collectable because they love horses and unicorns, the cards themselves convey the symbolism of Tarot, and the unicorn designs will give the reader an attachment and personal connection to the cards, which is neccassary for deeper and more spiritual readings.

As a professional Tarot Practioner, and one who also teaches the art of Tarot reading, I look for 2 major things in Tarot decks that I purchase.
#1 the symbols and how they match the general meanings #2 The quality of the artwork on the cards The symbolism on these cards is very Minimal. I am not certain as to how any novice tarot reader could use these cards and be an effective reader. The purpose of having rich Symbolism on the cards is needed in order to help guide the reader in to the interpretation of the card. Some of the images on these cards do not even make sense to the meaning of the cards. The Death card features the skeleton of a unicorn, yet unicorns are a symbol of healing and health. This is just one example as to why I feel that the cards fell short. As for the artwork, The deck felt rushed, it felt that each design on the card was not truly thought out. It doesnt mean that the artist did a bad job on the drawings, I feel that if the artist added more imagery to the deck, It would cover the inexpereince that you see in the drawings. I would love to see a redesign of this deck, with richer artwork, more symbology, and more thought about what the intentions are of this deck.

Mixed feelings,
By Sarah "mawkinberd" (Ruston, LA USA) - See all my reviews

As a collector of Tarot, I have seen many different interpretations of the cards and their meanings. I greatly enjoy the attempt this deck makes at some of the meanings of the cards. Some of the pictures are close to the best I have seen. However, other parts of the deck are lackluster in their attempt. It is also interesting to note than when the person couldn't find a significance that the unicorns would have, they just went ahead and added one into the background anyway. While I find some of the artwork to be fantastic, the overall effect is less than wonderful.

Lost Symbols,

This review is from: Unicorn Tarot Deck & Book Set [With Book] (Paperback)
The unicorn is not always white. It surprises me that the pictures were so innacurate. Although not all unicorns have cloven hooves or lion's tails, not all of them look like horses. a more acurate version of this book would have been to use the different species of unicorns to display the tarot's signifigance. whether rider/waite or thoth based or whatever, you should not try to lose meaning based on the theme of the deck. it just makes me a little sad. The artwork is nice, but has little actual signifigance in the tarot. I do however use the deck. the illustrations are better than some other illustrations, and i dont really need the keys present in most decks, so since i like unicorns, i decided to use these ones to make it a little nicer. otherwise, for artwork, i would recommend one of the Dragon tarot decks, there is one i am thinking of but i dont remember what it is called, or the thoth deck for experienced readers

delightful - but inaccurate unicorns,
This review is from: Unicorn Tarot Deck & Book Set [With Book] (Paperback)
As an experienced, professional Tarot reader, I have found this pack to be a delight to work with and popular amongst my clients. However, I don't think the illustrator knew that the mythical unicorn should have cloven hooves and a tail which is more like a donkey's or a cow's tail, instead of horse hooves and tail! Apart from that inaccuracy, I find it inspirational and benevolent in every way.

An okay deck,

This deck wasn't all that great. The pictures and symbols were pretty good. The meanings were too fuzzy. I wouldn't even reccommend this to an intermediate or advanced person. I guess it all depends on your style, but this was obviously not mine. I think that if a little bit more time and thought was given into this deck, it would have been a lot better.

Great deck, but difficult for a beginner,

I have been in love with this deck since I picked it up roughly 6 years ago. Some of the pictures are difficult to interpret (the 8 of Rods springs to mind) and others deviate from the more traditional meanings but I've found the cards to be VERY accutate. The artwork, while not as detailed as some decks, is beautiful in it's simplicity. If you are a beginning reader, have a deck like the Rider-Waite or Robin Wood Tarot available and take the time to compare the pictures. It will help A LOT! I've been doing this and have discovered much more in the cards than I noticed before.

Inaccurate and Misleading,
By Richard and Jennifer Shadowfox (Shadowfoxtarot.com) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unicorn Tarot Deck & Book Set [With Book] (Paperback)
This deck and book set was purchased as a birthday gift to introduce an 11 year old girl to Tarot, in which she had indicated an interest.
This deck was created by Suzanne Star, and illustrated by Liz Hilton. In the 164 page book, the entire first chapter of 28 pages is devoted to a sort of fantasy story, which admittedly we lost interest in after a few pages. Chapter 2 actually starts addressing learning the Tarot, but goes back and forth between explaining beginning preparations and "counseling your clients", which is inconsistent in the level of instruction. In the first paragraph of Chapter 2, there is a sentence stating that "Centuries ago, the Romany Gypsy people spread the word about the ability to see the future through the use of Tarot." It has been determined through the diligent work of the Tarot historians that the Gypsy people did not use the Tarot. They used regular playing cards during that period in history, and many still do. Tarot comes from the "Carte da Troinfi", which was later changed to Tarocchi. and the first person credited with using it for foretelling the future was Eteilla, who published his first book on card reading in 1770. This inaccuracy was a big red flag for us, and as we proceeded further into the book, we became more and more disappointed. The symbolism can best be described as a very vague interpretation of the Rider/Waite/Smith with a unicorn thrown into the picture. We were not impressed with the artwork, which appears to be flat in both perspective and color. Had we seen this deck and book beforehand, we would not have purchased it. As a general rule, preteen girls and unicorns go hand in hand, but not in this case. We can only hope at this point that her interest in learning the Tarot is still salvageable. |
