I believe that this is perhaps one of the best CDs in my collection as it was one of the best in my old LP collection. Silvio is unquestionably a reference in Latin American folk music. He's an accomplished guitar player, an amazing singer and a monumental songwriter. His lyrics in this album have a touch of César Vallejo (the Peruvian poet) and surrealism, and yet they can be humorous and incredibly moving. Unicorn, the song, has become a Latin American anthem. La Maza, La Gaviota, Por quien merece amor are pure poetic gold. If someone wants to get exposed to this Cuban artist, THIS is the CD to get introduced to his art. You'll not regret it.

This CD born in a time of Cuba - Unites States' cold war for help to Nicaragua. Is not necessary know english to aprecciate the music and lirical of Silvio. Is one of a kind CD, buy it.

...but who could buy a Silvio Rodriguez' Album hoping to find a song by Cecilia Noel? You would be the worst buyer ever. If you buy this Album, you'll enjoy Silvio's melodies that are almost magic. He is an outstanding guitarrist, he has an extraordinay dramatic sese and emotional range. But if you could understand spanish, you might understand his lyrics that actually are not simple. It is just poesy. You'll enjoy the CD twice. And It is not a personal opinion, it is Ernesto Sabato's.

Silvio es el gran trovador de nuestra Patria Morena. Este disco es uno de mis favoritos puesto que contiene de principio a fin, mensajes inteligentes acerca de diferentes aspectos de nuestra vida cotidiana en America Latina: amor, patriotismo, nostalgias, esperanzas, temores y mas. Es, simplemente, poesia pura. La musica es muy bella y lamento no ser musico para poderla apreciar desde un nivel mas tecnico. Obra de arte.

I first heard of Sylvio Rodriguez from the BMW Films website that featured critically acclaimed directors for their commercials. One of them was by the famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai where he used the track 'Unicornio' from this album. I immediately fell in love with this song, although i don't understand Spanish, i went to the nearest record store and purchased the album.
All the tracks in this album are wonderful! The melodies are hypnotic and will definitley not disappoint. I must stress the fact that even though i don't understand Spanish, i enjoyed it tremendously. It has a strong cuban-jazz flavor and yet not too overwhelming. the female vocal is reminiscent of Celia Cruz. There are soft romantic ballads as well as upbeat tempos that will sure to lighten up your mood. It is perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Like one of the reviewer Fannie from NYC, I was introduced to this music by watching the BMW short films. The magic of the music is powerful enough that you don't need to understand to language to appreciate it.

Silvio Rodriguez is a cuban singer, who has a warm-hearted voice and led the new wave of cuban song movement(nueva trova). If you are a fan of Mercedes Sosa, and also you ever heard 'Unicornio' and 'La Maza' sung by her, it's written by Silvio originally. He is an icon of new Cuban music movement, you can check it out while istening this CD including his finest best songs. Trembling soft voice and strings will make you comfortable, and will make you in a midsummer cuban night's dream.
