5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, July 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Unicorns Are Real: A Right-Brained Approach to Learning (Creative Parenting/Creative Teaching Series) (Paperback)
As an extremely right-brained individual who also has severedyscalculia (math-learning disability), I found in this book so manyideas which would have been helpful when I was a child. The author shows great insight into the characteristics and strengths of right-brained individuals, and gives instructions for determining if a child is predominantly left or right-brained. In addition, there are short, simple exercises which can be used to help them with everything from letter and number recognition to body awareness and verbal expression. Because older children can do the activities with slight modifications,I highly recommend this book to parents of right brained children between the ages of four and fifteen. It is a much needed resource for educators who teach regular education classes,RSP, and special Education. It may also be somewhat helpful for students in special day classes. As a private tutor, I plan to use the ideas in this book with many of the students I work with.

I read this book twelve years ago. As a homeschool mom it helped me understand the ways I needed to work with my child. Now, as he approaches graduation...he is a musician and speaks two languages fluently. I will never forget the day this book fell into my hands!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any new parent and all parents of all ages., October 30, 1999

This review is from: Unicorns Are Real: A Right-Brained Approach to Learning (Creative Parenting/Creative Teaching Series) (Paperback)
I give this book to all new new expectant parents. I used this book and it helped my son and I understand how to teach him, when his school teachers couldn't. His response was "You mean I'm not really dumb!" That statement was worth the price of the book. I have helped my children, grandchildren and countless others by suggesting and using ideas from this book. It was recommeneded to me in an adult training class for supervisory individuals. Wow! It helped in may ways and many situations from babies through adults.

Then I read this book and applied a few of the very simple exercises into his everyday routine. Last year he received his MFA in photography and experimental animated film from the California Institute of the Arts. He now has a job at USC and is excited that one of the benefits it offers is free classes. He wants to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering! Most importantly he is happy and proud of himself, with good reason.

This book saved his life!

This book was so informatal on how to home school my right brained son. I used the suggestions listed, and found that he could have a higher potential than 2nd grade as a previous Dr. has said. He is now a A & B student, and has a great self-esteem. Thanks

This is a very good primer for the regular classroom teacher who may be wondering what she or he could do to help many students who don't fit the traditional mold in a classroom. It explains to me why some of my students behaved the way they did. It offers simple ways to help those students. I wish I had read this years ago.
