5.0 out of 5 stars Unicorns I Have Known
I got this book back when it first came out (it is even signed by Robert Vavra) and I love it. Although they use horses to portray the unicorns, (in an article I read, Vavra comments on the questions he gets about how the horns stay on, but later states that he doesn't think it really matters if they are false horns, but the magic of the animal.) 2.0 out of 5 stars Can We Lookit the Pretty Horsies Some More?
The photographs are gorgeous, the models used can be recognised galloping about Vavra's true classics of equine behavior "Equus" and "Such Is Te Real Nature of Horses", and they only make up less than half of this lead sinker of a book. The rest of the book has some wonderful line drawings, a fictional quest for a unicorn and a rehashing of all known...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unicorns I Have Known, February 4, 2000
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
I got this book back when it first came out (it is even signed by Robert Vavra) and I love it. Although they use horses to portray the unicorns, (in an article I read, Vavra comments on the questions he gets about how the horns stay on, but later states that he doesn't think it really matters if they are false horns, but the magic of the animal.) He tells a story of a horse that ran off during a photo shoot, and ended up near a road. At that moment, a schoolbus full of children drove by, and then stopped. All the kids and the bus driver watched in amazement, thinking it was really a unicorn. Vavra and his assistants hid in the bushes, quite enjoying themselves. This book is a wonderful collection on beautiful photographs and the poems and quotes used describe the feelings of those photos. If you love the lure of the unicorn, the beauty of horses, or just great photographs, then buy this book.

It's a fascinating book non only for ''horse lover'' (Robert Vavra is very well known by horse enthusiast worldwide) this is a book that can fascinate anyone in love with BEAUTY, ART, and POETRY. All photos are surrounded by a magical athmosphere and they are enriched and completed by beautiful literary quotations. 5.0 out of 5 stars Brought back the passion with which I believed as a child, October 25, 2000
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
I'm a True Believer of Unicorns. As a Unicorn Fanatical child I even entertained notions I might be one. As an adult, I can't bring myself to DISbelieve in them. They are, to me, the epiphany of the beauty and magik and perfection the world has to offer - they are the embodiment of it. And yet - and yet - it is hard to find a modern representation of them which doesn't overdo the glitter and the rainbows, attribute human characteristics and sloppy sentimentality to the Beasts. Sick of the tacky, trendy new-age representations of Unicorns in the world today, Vavra's book was a blessing when I received it as a Christmas gift last year. Beautiful, glorious, heart warming, faith-inspiring pictures of Unicorns in their natural habitats, free from unncessary sparkles and glittery adornment, wild and Free as all Unicorns Should Be. Accompanied by Unicorn text from a multitude of sources, from thousands of years ago to the very present. And always, the encouragement to BELIEVE. Oh I do believe! This book is a perfect gift for anyone who feel the magik of the Unicorn, young and old alike. It will fill your heart with hope and faith and that perfect wonder which comes over us when our imaginations have been stirred...

My heart felt as though it would break upon reading then, at this page, Vavra talking about such details as how they kept the horns stuck on the horses :( Then it occured to me...

Maybe he just wants us to THINK they were really horses, so that noone tries to hunt them down...to protect them and keep them sacred. To keep them Free.

This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
This gorgeous book is one of the finest unicorn books I own. It has great pictures and lots of unicorn details and a unicorn searching guide. It is worth buying if you like unicorns or photography. It is worth getting Unicorn of Kilimanjaro or the Calendar if you can find them as well. It is on my list of favorite all time books, and i see a lot of them as i work at a bookstore. By this if you or someone you love likes unicorns and give the gift of magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing is believing!!!!, July 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
I read this book years ago when it first came out and I still have not found one to match it. It truly reinforces the believers of unicorns and perhaps makes the non-believers think twice. It is a beautiful and magical look into the unicorns world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unicorns....As they should be......................., April 6, 2002
By
Russell H. Burton (near the East coast forests.........) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
This book by Robert Vavra portrays the unicorns as how they are. Peaceful, intimate, distant, yet very close. The only difference between the images in this book and the rat race that life is somehow pushed into, is the lucid dream state of mind that is turned on when reading this book. It will bring you there. A very thorough, and colorful view into the unicorns themselves. The question might be raised whether they are real or not,...........but after viewing the pictures, your mind will wander to a place of mossy lichens, willow trees, and cushion plants, and georgous animals that mystify.,.. A very good book that everyone from children to the elderly will adore. It has one particular image that caught my eye more than the others; It was the picture at sunset with the whole group of unicorns on the beach,...........simply breathtaking.......This book will enlighten all who view it. Peace,.........Onepath

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL, May 23, 2001
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
My uncle bought me this book when I was seven, almost sixteen years ago. I adored it as a child and I still completely enjoy looking through it now. It is singularly the best book I have ever seen about unicorns, and I have spent an extensive amount of time looking. The pictures are completely realistic and lavish. They carry you away into a world that you can only dream about. Not one page of this book is wasted--from the pictures to the details and data about unicorns in the back of the book. If you are intrigued by unicorns, this book is a must have; you will not regret buying this, or if you know someone who loves unicorns, you could not get them a better gift. It is a work of art from cover to cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars real or not?, February 16, 2002
By

This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
Are they real or are they wearing wigs and fake horns? that's what I kept trying to figure out.Every time I go through this incredibly beautiful book I feel slightly foolish and hopeful, prefering to believe in their magical existence. And don't forget, this book was first published before the world had ever heard of Photoshop or Mac computers. Irregardless, the text is as compelling as the photographs, and you think, well, why not? I noticed that one reviewer mentioned article about Vavra confessing to using horses with wigs etc. but are they all horses? Maybe he just said that to keep people from hunting them down. Besides, the thought that they are real makes the world a slightly lovelier place. To think they just don't exist AT ALL, AND NEVER HAVE!!!is depressing. My copy is well worn so it's one "coffee table" book that has done more than weight down a cofee table. worth spending the $$ ifyou love unicorns.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most magical book ever published, May 3, 2001
By
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
I love unicorns and this is the ultimate unicorn book. Peter Beagle's Last Unicorn has the history and story on them, Vavra has the sheer beauty. I found this book by chance here and it was out of print then, paid almost double...but every last penny was worth it when I opened it for the first time. The settings are as stunning at the animals themselves. Vavra brings out the true emotions of the unicorns. Some of his pictures are reminicent of tapestries of olde. So many people incuire about this book when they see it. If you are a true lover and fan of unicorns, you will find this is the best.END

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!, October 23, 2001
By
This review is from: Unicorns I Have Known (Hardcover)
I loved this book! Ever since I was two, I've loved unicorns and this is my favorite unicorn book. I can't believe these beautiful pictures. On the very last page of the book, there are even tips on finding a unicorn. (what not to bring, what to bring, what the unicorn might do if you actually see one, ect.)
