1.0 out of 5 stars Screen Reads "Searching"... Forever!, June 26, 2009

This review is from: Uniden Loud and Clear Accessory Handset and Charger (EZX290) (Office Product)
I inserted the battery into this phone after opening the box and reading the instructions. The screen lit up, but the battery was not fully charged. Oddly, the screen said "SEARCHING." I placed it into the cradle. No change. I placed it into the cradle of the main phone. No change. Hmmm. I thought maybe it just needed a full charge. I discarded the box, thinking it would work after a full charge. The manual said let charge for 15 hours. After 15 hours, I tried to register the phone again. No change. The screen still says "SEARCHING"... forever! I'll be asking for an RMA number and -- if that fails -- I'll have to work directly with Uniden to replace/fix this piece of trash. It would be a nice phone if it would work. UPDATE: I fixed it! Sadly, the manual that ships with this accessorry does not include the RESET instructions. If the manual had included that information, it would have saved me a lot of grief. Guess where I found the RESET instructions. Buried on page 28 of the manual that shipped with the base unit that I already had. You just hold down the FLASH/EXIT and the POUND keys. Select BASE UNAVAILABLE. Confirm. That should then allow you to put the phone into the base cradle and -- VOILA! -- it should now REGISTER. Now that it works, I give it FIVE STARS. Too bad I can't edit the stars above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice phone - Target had base set cheaper, January 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Uniden Loud and Clear Accessory Handset and Charger (EZX290) (Office Product)
Tried ordering the base unit from Amazon, they couldn't get it. Ordered online from another company, then found it cheaper at my local Target. Nice phone for my elderly mother - hearing assist, lighted keypad, big keys, lightweight. My mom has trouble putting receiver exactly on her ear - this could be better (like the old landline phones!), but there is an identation that helps, more than on most portables. Also, the base unit can work without power, a key feature for us with frequent power outages. We've tried many phones, this seems the best. We have the base (which comes with one handset) and this extra handset so that she can always carry one with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hear me loud and clear: how to save yourself money, time and frustration., January 16, 2010

This review is from: Uniden Loud and Clear Accessory Handset and Charger (EZX290) (Office Product)
I'm assuming this is a 5-star handset that synchs up immediately and automatically with Uniden's "Loud & Clear" Dect 6.0 model (EZAi 2997). But after waiting a couple of months for it to arrive from Amazon, I cancelled the order, first verifying with Uniden that their DCX150 handset was compatible with good old "Loud & Clear." I received the DCX150 in 2 days and saved myself thirty bucks (it could be 50-60 dollars if you decided you simply had to have the EZX290 from some dealer other than Amazon).

I wish I could say it was smooth sailing from there on, but that was not the case. Since the DCX150 will not fit on the base of the EZAi 2997, you have to reconfigure it. Using both instruction manuals, I tried unsuccessfully for almost two days to get the two phones to talk to each other--or, for that matter, to get the new handset to talk to anyone at all. Then I sent out a desperation SOS message to Uniden. In the meantime, I discovered the secret. The instructions are anything but "loud and clear" for either unit, but here's what you have to know:

1. "Base" in the instructions always refers to the base of the master phone, the one that's connected to your telephone line. The word is not used in reference to the cradle that the handset sits in.

2. The instructions are pretty clear about which buttons you have to press on both units: simultaneously depress the Menu/Select and the # (pound) buttons.

3. Next, the toughest part of all: first, unplug the "base." Now press and hold the "FIND" button. I couldn't find the "find" button until the next day--if you do so at night, best use a flashlight. It's "hidden" behind the phone on the main "base," simply a small, round, black button that appears to have no label (a flashlight and magnifying glass will reveal the word "Find," but it's black on black). Next, while continuing to press the "Find" button, replug the "base" into AC electricity.

4. Now you're almost there: simply pick up your fully charged handset and press the # key, holding it down for several seconds, or until its display says "Handset Registering" and "Registration Complete." (Believe me, it's a great feeling to see those two words after seeing nothing but "Handset Registering Failed" for the better part of two days.

If the above sounds complicated, wait til you read the instructions.
