4.0 out of 5 stars Nice unit, overall, for the price
I bought this phone after reading reviews on Amazon and Consumer Reports. I was looking to replace a Panasonic phone (model KX-TG2382) that I bought only 2 years ago, and always had problems with (had a clicking noise on the phone line). Since the Panasonic phone was out of warranty, they wouldn't fix it or exchange it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice unit, overall, for the price, September 21, 2005
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)

So far, I have been very happy with the Uniden. It was reasonably priced, and I like having a line that won't go dead in a power outage.

The only drawbacks I can see are the lack of speakerphone on the handset unit.

Another reason I only gave this unit 4 stars is because if you program the handset to be in "AutoTalk" mode, and you have the handset somewhere besides sitting in the cradle, then you can't answer that phone by hitting the talk button. So, I found the handset a bit confusing in this mode.

Also, the answering machine recordings sound a bit too "digital" for me.

However, the voice quality of both the base phone and the handset are very clear, and I'm happy with that!

5.0 out of 5 stars no problems, October 3, 2005
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
We bought this phone about a month ago, and have had no problems with the volume of the cordless phone as one reviewer stated.

This was the cheapest corded/cordless phone around and we found that the Ni-Cad battery can be replaced with Ni-MH, which we were looking for in a phone since our last phone's battery kept dying fast.

We have been impressed with the sound quality and all the extras that this phone has.

We like having a corded phone, as well as a cordless, so we always know where one phone is located when we're trying to answer the phone.

We think it was a very good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Phone that answers all our needs, April 1, 2006
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
My wife and I are over 65 and need a phone with big volume, big buttons, and ease of use. This phone has all these and more. I really like its auto dial system that lists on its base what you have programed, then lets you scan through the people to the one you want, then simple hit the talk button. I really like the combination of a base speaker phone with corded handset and answering machine. I use the speaker phone all the time and my wife prefers the handset. It comes with a cordless handset which my wife has in her bedroom. For the first time my wife has no trouble using the telephone and using auto dial and she can turn the volume up so she has no trouble hearing. It also has recorded instructions and help features in case you've forgotten the exact procedure for a feature you don't use often. We love this phone. It's a great buy!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
Pros

affordable full featured (records conversations, handset feels good in hand, unit has corded phone back up for power outages.

Cons

CAN'T USE HANDSET MORE THAN FEW FEET FROM BASE!!!

No mention was made in the literature that the handset cannot be moved more than a few feet from the base unit for reception of signal.

When I called Customer Service they said that was expected behavior. I said I'd had other 5.8 GHz phones and could traverse entire house and even yard from same base location.

They said that was a 5.8 Digital not ANALOG phone.......

This makes the phone virtually worthless.

I tried every suggestion onm website for that symptom. No improvement. Very diappointing performance. Unacceptable.

4.0 out of 5 stars wireless noisy, November 1, 2005

I was a bit disappointed in how noisy the wireless handset is when only a short distance (20-30 feet) from the base station. I expected better from a 5.8 GHz unit. Other than that, a decent setup. It is a nice feature to have the corded base for when the battery on the handset goes dead or someone leaves it under the sofa cushions, you can still run over to the base and answer. Answering machine and callerid function as expected.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peace of mind, good sound, but "channels" could stand improvement, August 30, 2005
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
The title says it all. This phone provides peace of mind, with the landline that won't go dead when the electricity goes away. The second unit sits in a small cradle, and does not have to be connected to a phone jack. This is great.

The answering machine works well. The sound is great, and for me, hard of hearing as I am, it provides ample opportunity for adjustment to make it so I can hear.

Only one complaint: The channels are not always available at their best. When you hit an area that reception is not great, the phone makes a scratchy noise, letting you know that it needs to be moved to a different area.

All in all, I do like this phone very much. Oh, there is just one more thing: When you do "call-waiting" and click the "talk" button, there is a hesitation before you will know that you have connected to the other party, so don't hang up thinking that there is no one there.

I do like the phone a lot, and very much appreciate the ability to have both a land line and a portable unit, all for less than some single telephones, without all of the extras!

It's a goodie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great phone for the price!, April 3, 2006
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
We recently purchased this phone and absolutely love it! The only flaw we can find is that you have to dial fairly slowly. If you dial too quickly it just bypasses the last number you have pressed. I guess it's a good phone for making sure we slow down in life! The answering system messages come through very crisp and clear and we LOVE the feature that it beeps when you have new messages! Overall we would definitely purchase this phone again.

5.0 out of 5 stars As advertised and works very well, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
Have had this unit in place for more than a month. Every thing works as advertised and has some nice features. There are a confusing number of buttons with some titles not untuitively indicative of the the function that will be performed. Sound is excellent and have no interference on both the wireless and hard wired functions. I have a wireless system for my computer and it has not had any effect on the operation. Would recommend this to anyone who wants the available features and needs only one remote unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad cordless phone, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
We bought this phone with the hopes of having one corded phone (in case of power outages) and one cordless phone. The cordless phone works intermittently. It does not matter how close or far you are from the base, sometimes the volume just cuts out. It does not hang up on the person you are talking to, just the volume acts as if it drops down to "1" and you can't hear what they are saying. We now can only use the corded phone.

In the past I have been very happy with Uniden, I will be returning this phone perhaps for a Motorolla.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uniden Service, September 17, 2005

This review is from: Uniden CXAI5198 5.8 GHz Analog Cordless Phone with Corded Base and Answering System (Office Product)
I bought my new Uniden phone from Amazon and found upon setting it up that it did not ring or go to the answering machine. I called the customer support number in the users manuel and they told me I would have to return it to the address listed. I did that and waited almost a month for a replacement. The replacement was an old, rebuilt dirty unit with nicks and scratches. That's Uniden's replacement for a new phone that doesn't work. Not good customer relations.
