2.0 out of 5 stars Great quality but it doesn't last long
I bought it just a year ago. Great audio and great battery length. After a year only one of the three headsets has audio coming in. If someone calls and you press "talk" on the other two headsets, you will not hear anything but the person on the other line will hear you. Disappointed.

I bought this 3 phone set at Target directly for about $70. I also considered the 5.8Ghz model (similar features but pricier) and some Panasonic multi handsets but they were almost all pricier. Our house is in a neighborhood of 1/3 acre lots so interference density is fairly low. Figured I would try the 2.4 model first to see if it works well with neighbors all using cordless and several wireless Internet signals floating around.

Overall, it works well for us, I'd recommend it to others, and would buy it again.

+++++PLUSSES+++++++++

Good sound, good signal, good features

Physical size and shape is good; one of the reasons I like this is that even though it is small, you can cradle it comfortably; feels light but solid in your hand.

Good battery life and good range

Easy to set up; menu options pretty straightforward.

Speakerphone is excellent.

Ringer tone options are a gift for us. Several good softer options, but only 2 volume settings. We found 2 that work well for us.

We'll probably buy an extra 4th handset when we decide we need one upstairs.

We have 3 Apple computers all using a airport express base station for wireless networking. We have not had any interference, even though they are both on the 2.4 Ghz band.

My wife decided in her post-pregnancy brain state to run one handset through the heavy duty wash cycle, and 2 rinse cycles just for fun. The waterlogged handset looked bad, but after taking it apart, 10 minutes with a hairdryer and 30 min in our dryer's drying rack on low heat, all the condensation was gone. It would turn on but not work properly. But we charged it overnight and the next morning it was perfect. We expect it to die, but pretty impressive that it could recover with minimal drying effort on our part. We recover car key remotes this way, too.

--------MINUSES----------

Some other reviews discuss the buttons. Here is the deal. The SIZE of the buttons is fine, but they are both small-ish AND high profile so it seems like they are "too small". A better design would have been to leave them flush with the case (like our cell phones, the buttons on which are even smaller, but don't SEEM small because there is plenty of space around them.)

Room Monitor: works very well, but when you activate it, the phone that "listens" rings this horribly loud ring that you cannot control in the menu. Uniden obviously did not give parents a chance to test because with our light sleeping kids we would like to turn on the room monitor without having to sound a fire alarm in our house. Also, because these have a "directlink" mode that allows them to behave like walkie-talkies away from the base, I assumed we could take them to a friend's house and use them as room monitors there. But, no - room monitor feature has to use the base. Direct link does not. But room monitor and direct link cannot be used together. Bummer.

Backlight should stay on while phone is in the base, but it's not. Should be a menu feature.

Inexpensive multi handset system. Packed with features, we especially like the room monitor, speaker phone on each handset, and direct connect feature (lets you use the phones as walkie-talkies away from your home.)

I have two of these systems in my house, total of 6 phones, and we use Vonage broadband phone service. These phones are PERFECT for us, and integrate nicely with Vonage(or any other phone company with voicemail.) One touch voicemail access, blinking light message indicator, etc.

Truly awesome for the small amount of $ they cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Price, Good Quality, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Uniden DCT646-3 2.4 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with 3 Handsets and Caller ID (Silver) (Office Product)
I have numerous Uniden Cordless Phones in the past, and not had any problems with them. So this time when I was shopping at Target I picked this package up because it was an incrediable value compared to other companies who were charging the same price for only two handsets - and that includes the base.

So I get these thing home and they are like mini cell phones:

Light up easy to read screen

Voice Mail Indicator

Caller ID Call Waiting

A lot of ring tones

Excellent sound quality

Battery indicator right on the screen

Very light weight

Stylish

Very easy to use

I have no bones with these phones, ya they are not 5.8GHz but I still get good range with them, and it doesn't mess with my wireless internet connection, this is just a great bargain for you dollar!

4.0 out of 5 stars almost 5 stars!, March 2, 2006

Sound quality is excellent. Speaker phone is excellent, much better than some corded speaker phones that I have used. Features are great. Love the size and the 20 different ringtones that you can set to caller ID.

Charging indicator lights let you see from a distance they are in their cradle properly.

You can wall mount the base unit (with the arch).

2 things keep it from 5 stars:

Doesn't use standard NiMH batteries (sorry my vtech ev2625 spoiled me) and doesn't have a mute button! There are all sorts of extra buttons, some with more than one use, but one of the most important buttons takes 3 steps that no one can remember on this phone.

The volume control on the front of the phone is awkward too. If you want to adjust the handset button and you are not on speaker phone you have to move the phone away from your face to change the volume. My vtech had a control button on the side where it belongs.

I purhcased the Uniden DCT46-3 cordless phone system for use in our three-storey home. I put one handset on each floor with the base unit on the second floor. We enjoy using the phones because of the convenience it offers. Also, the phones act as a convenient intercom system for all three floors; as well as being used as a direct-linked radio and a baby monitor. The multiple ring tones available are also a nice touch.

The only complaint here is that the range is not that great. Our house is made of concrete, so the radio waves might not be able to penetrate well through the floors and walls. I am sure that the phone will work much better with a direct line of sight to the base unit.

Overall, I am very impressed and happy with this item.

I am very happy with this phone - the range is perfect for my needs, reaching to every part of my house and even down the driveway to the mailbox. My only complaint (and the reason for not giving it 5 stars) is that when you receive a call on one handset, it registers as a missed call on the other handsets - as well, when you clear the missed calls from the memory of one handset, it does not clear it from the other handsets. Not necessarily a deal breaker, just a mild annoyance as I periodically have to go around to each receiver to clear out the memory. But otherwise, the features are great, it is comfortable to hold and use and is just what I had hoped it would be.

This review is from: Uniden DCT646-3 2.4 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with 3 Handsets and Caller ID (Silver) (Office Product)
I've had thesee phones about 2 months now and I love them! The sound is clear, they work fine all over the house, and I added a fourth phone with no problems at all. The display is clear, the call id works great and you can erase all entries at once instead of one at a time like my current phone. The buttons are a little small for large hand people, but it's easy to get used to. Overall, this is the best cordless expandable phone system for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute, powerful phone system, January 11, 2006
This review is from: Uniden DCT646-3 2.4 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with 3 Handsets and Caller ID (Silver) (Office Product)
I got the phone yesterday. I'm surprised the size of the phone, just like a cell phone. But it comes with almost all the functions I want. The speakers, call ID, 100 address book, programmable tone, ... It's worth the price you paid. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent phone system for our home!, January 3, 2006
This review is from: Uniden DCT646-3 2.4 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with 3 Handsets and Caller ID (Silver) (Office Product)
I bought this 3-phone cordless system w/some hesitation after reading a few of the reviews, however, for the price and the convenience of not having to install phone cord outlets all over the house - I figured I'd try it out. It has been wonderful! We've only had it for a week, but wow! What a difference it's made for us. My son (16) was always taking our cordless phone to his room, forgetting he had it up there & then, inevitably, it would 'die'...now he has his own phone in his room & leaves ours alone! I'm even ordering the additional 4th phone for our home this week for our den. The only things I'd like to see improved upon is a 'caller announce'...our old phone had this & it was really nice to know who was calling before you even bothered to look at the phone and my son would love to be able to plug it into the computer & download more ringtones...but hey, for $65 who can complain?! And those two things are just for fun, not necessary anyway.

I'm very pleased with these cordless phones. The sound quality is good, the battery life is good, and they're very customizable. The only drawback is that my hand falls asleep when I hold them for more than a minute or two. Not sure if that has to do with the design. To remedy, I use a headset.
