Uniden DECT1080 DECT6.0 Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and Call Waiting/Caller Id

Uniden got the electronics and features nearly perfect on the prior models. Then this model also perfects the ergonomics in the same way Apple did with the ipod and computer. The phone not only functions excellently, it feels good in your hand and against your ear. The buttons have the reassuring feedback similar to an HP calculator. My wife is very picky and finally agrees with her husband (rare indeed) that his phone sounds, looks, feels and works great.

I liked a lot of things about this phone, but I returned it for one reason: we get a lot of marketing calls so we screen all of our phone calls. This machine records a message every time someone calls, regardless of whether or not they leave a message. When I get home, I don't want to see my machine flashing 18 messages and when I check only three of them have actual voices and the rest of them are just dead air. That's really an inconvenience for me and a waste of my time. So, the phone had to go back ... even though I liked everything else about it.

One feature, essential to me, has not been mentioned by other reviewers. Uniden seems to be the only phone manufacturer that provides an audible beep to alert the user to waiting messages. I seem to be incapable of noticing a blinking light or other visual message waiting alert, so I stick to Uniden. The only way a buyer can find out about this feature is to download and read the owner's manual at the Uniden site. It is not called out in the printing on the box or any other prominent place.

This base unit, with extra handsetsUniden DCX 100 Accessory Handset and Charger for DCT756, DCT758-2, DCT7585-2, DCT76565-2, makes a very good household system, and the base unit is smaller than many and takes up very little space.

Bottom line... it seems to me that Uniden rushed this product to market in the US. The prerecorded announcements have a British accent, the times and dates are in European format. I could live with these, but the human interface is not at all intuitive and the instructions are poor. If you doubt me, try to record a personal annoncement (OGM as Uniden calls it) for the answering service. With the instructions in hand, I bet you can't do it the first half dozen tries. The answering service often beeps (continuously) even when the calling party did not leave a message. No caller ID on the answering base, so for convenience a CID unit needs to be added. And the other features are as hard to use. Even adding another party to a conversation is tedious and fails at times. Voice quality; good; range: barely acceptable; battery life seems good. But I'm returning mine.

I love this Answering/Cordless Phone. Many extras including baby monitor, call transfer,expandable, able to listen to messages from any phone. Already have two other compatable cordless phones, so now they all work with each other. great Buy!!!!! Fast Shipping!! VERY PLEASED!!!!!

Very clear hearing and speech. Lot's of "bells and whistles"
on this baby, easy to set up.
Like the fact that it doesn't pick-up hang up calls on the
answerer,you tend to get lots of them during the
"political season"!!!!!

I bought this phone because I found a local store that had it 50% off. After 5 days, I returned it simply due to the odd UI and an undocumented feature: you can't pick up the phone from any handset if another handset has the line. It says "line in use". I have never seen a home phone do this. It guess I could see it as a privacy feature, but to get someone on the other side of the house to pickup the call, you have to transfer the call to that handset. What if you don't know what room/handset is in?

Here's my rundown:
pros:
+ Lightweight
+ Small, candy-bar size (it actually looks like a cell phone)
+ Very low cost for a DECT phone
+ Expansion handsets only $35, compared to others which are upwards of $70

Cons:
- proprietary battery
- no backlit buttons
- menu UI is slow
- menu UI is confusing
- obviously a european market design (british recording, date format)
- The speakerphone volume is weak. My panasonic has a speakerphone volume 100% louder than this
- The earpiece volume isn't that loud, even on the loudest setting. My panasonic is at least 33% louder on the earpiece.
- No external headset jack.

Amazingly poor phone. Although Uniden can be good at times, this one is virtually worthless:

1) The keys on the handset began to wear out after just 3 weeks of use. By 4 months, only 2 of 12 keys were legible. (My nails are quite short.)
2) It's very hard to turn the ringer on and off: You literally have to press 6 buttons to get the ringer tone to turn on or off.
3) Callers who want to bypass the recorded announcement (outgoing message) by hitting pound can only get it to bypass after pressing pound about 4 times (it works inconsistently)
4) If you want to monitor your incoming calls, you have to listen to your outgoing message each time a call comes in (can't turn it off).
5) This is obviously a phone prepared for a European market that was dropped onto the American market. Date stamp is not in American format.
6) Support staff at Uniden were rude, to put in mildly, and obviously not interested in being helpful to customers.

The phone fits perfectly in the hand, and the speakerphone feature is excellent! The voice quality is first-rate, and the answering function works quite well. Not a perfect phone, but one of the best I've owned in the last 10 years.

Excellent sound and range.

No headset jack and no belt clip. What a pity! I sent it back.
