4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, nice design
I finally convinced myself that I had a good reason to purchase the FRS radios I had been longing for...

1.0 out of 5 stars Wow, these things were awful.
I purchased them to keep in contact with another couple while we were at Disney World on vacation. They had almost no range at all and in fact, only worked when we were in sight of each other already, even with brand new batteries. I will be returning them and hopefully replacing them with a more suitable product.

I finally convinced myself that I had a good reason to purchase the FRS radios I had been longing for...

The reason was a family trip to Disney World. My wife, unconvinced, humored me nonetheless. They immediately came in handy in our first ten minutes at the Magic Kingdom, however, as I ran off to get a FastPass to a ride while my wife and daughter stood in line for another ride.

The audio quality was pretty decent, although at maximum volume I could barely hear my wife over the Disney din. I also was very impressed with the vibrate call notification, but it did not seem to always work. Occasionally, I would push the call button over and over, but not get a response until I pushed the PTT button and shouted "Are you there?"

The backlighting feature is nice, and the radios have the standard 14 channels and 38 subcodes. We also found the carabiner clips very handy for clipping to belt loops and backpack straps.

There are a few accessories available -- including a VOX mic/headset (nope, a standard phone headset won't work) and different colored battery covers (the blue thing that wraps partially around the front).

At this price, I would definitely recommend the pair.

This product was substandard. In tests the radios were unable to transmit voices, they transmitted so much static you could not hear the other person from 200 ft away. Tried new batteries and still received too much static to hear the other person. Static did not occur on every transmission but did occur in 80% of the trials. We purchased a set of Motorola Talkabouts and have been pleased with their performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars The skinny., June 4, 2001
By A Customer
It's my first time buying a pair of these Family Radios, and I'm very happy with the Uniden FRS420. With 14 channels, 38 subcodes, 5 different call rings, and a vibrating alert. It can't be beat for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool looking and useful features to boot!, August 14, 2001
By
I picked these up for my upcoming move out of the state where I need to remain in contact with my girlfriend driving ahead of me (she tends to drive fast so I need to remind her to slow down). I got these simply because they had a backlit display and a vibration feature and they were priced right. I never used uniden radios before. First thing I did was test it out. My mom was in the basement and I went out for a walk. I walked about a mile down the street and I still had clear communication (mind you my mom was in the house!). Of course with all FRS radios (with the 2-mile range) things like building structure and elevation effect the range, but I found the Uniden FRS420 very competitive. I've also used the Motorola talkabout with the 38 subchannels and I wasn't as impressed as I was with the Uniden Eco Trek. I got more static from the motorola, but in fairness I used it in a much different setting. The vibration function is very useful especially if you want to use them where you might not hear the ringer, or you just want to be discreet (for espionage purposes;). There are 5 ring tones, a handy carabiner-style clip, 38 sub channels for privacy, and that backlit display. All those features make it desirable in my book. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you choose the FRS420.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for hunting, December 17, 2001

I purchased these radios for the sole purpose of using in the woods on hunting trips. I have to say I was impressed with them right away. Crystal clear with no squelch heard. I am not sure of the distance but I can say they work through thick woods and rolling hills in NE Georgia. The only complaint I have with them is the location of the call button. I seemed to hit that everytime I clipped it to my beltloop. The vibrate mode is well felt as well as you can hear the vibration going on as long as there are strong batteries installed.

It worked great at Disney World. Only 2 other people on our line. We were even in 2 separate cars driving fro Orlando to West Palm Beach in stormy weather, and we had clear and complete contact for the whole trip!! This was really great for people who just need something simple to use. We were in Florida for 10 days and did not have to change the batteries once! A godsend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping Track, September 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden Eco Trek2 FRS4202 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I bought these radios hoping to keep track of a very wandering 9-year-old with ADD. I have not had to "go looking" since. He wears one on a string around his neck and tucked into his shirt. The various call alarms work great. In town, the range is several blocks in the worst conditions, and out in the woods a mile or so is easy. The vibrating alarm is nice if you're in a public place, but you almost need to be holding the radio in your hand to feel it. For us, they make tracking kids a lot easier. Well worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars good reception, but call button gives false alarms, August 18, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden Eco Trek2 FRS4202 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I liked the sleek design and the clip. The reception was good and it's easy to use right out of the box. My only complaint is that the call button is not very recessed and gets pushed by accident many times both on my unit and on my kid's. Maybe if you don't bump into anything or try to put it in a pocket or backpack it will be ok. Great reception and features for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice pair of radios (I bought 2), July 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden Eco Trek2 FRS4202 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I mainly use FRS radios with a Law Enfocement Group in Hawaii, and it works great! I have been using these radios for about 3 months now, and they work perfectly with other brands of radios (a Motorola Talkabout w/ headset, and a pair of Audiovox with only 14 channels). The only complaint I have with this radios is that the call and menu button are using the same button. If I want to change channels, I have to press the menu button down for a long time, and if I forgot about that, then I send out a call message. Also, the vibrating feature isn't great, even with strong batteries.
