5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect price, perfect package, perfect performance
For the purpose of this review, I am discussing the Uniden GMR1038-2CK radios with recharging base. Please note that some of the reviewers here are mistakenly referring to the other package which includes the same radios, but no recharging base. The other package costs less and forces you to use alkaline batteries which do not offer sufficient runtime to power these...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great radios, not as good batteries
I bought these radios for work inside a building and across a mile radius. Like any other review of Uniden radios, their projected range is not correct, maybe in an open field. These radios were bought to supplement other Uniden radios. Well low and behold, the batteries don't last as long over an 8 hour day. I found out that the new radios had batteries that were 550mAh,...

This review is from: Uniden GMR1038-2CK 10-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
For the purpose of this review, I am discussing the Uniden GMR1038-2CK radios with recharging base. Please note that some of the reviewers here are mistakenly referring to the other package which includes the same radios, but no recharging base. The other package costs less and forces you to use alkaline batteries which do not offer sufficient runtime to power these radios.

The radios come well packaged and well protected in a plastic blister pack. The radios come with 2 rechargeable battery packs (one for each radio) 2 belt clips, and a charging base. The instructions state that the radios should be charged for 16 hours before first use, and following these directions will give you the best battery life. By the way, the instructions are written in both English and Spanish.

These radios are excellent. Out in the field the display is exceptionally easy to read. The digits are large, clear, and backlit in a green glow for night use. The buttons and controls are positioned perfectly so even people with larger hands will have no problems. In fact, these are probably the perfect radios if you will be wearing gloves while operating them.

A word of caution... these radios are capable of working on FRS channels (no license required) and GMRS channels (FCC license required). An FCC radio license currently costs $75 for 5 years, but you are then legally entitled to use the GMRS channels. When you are using a GMRS channel, the radios automatically switch to high-power mode and you can approach 10 miles range (provided terrain is not an obstacle). If you use the free FRS channels, the radio will conform to FCC rules and broadcast at a lower power. I use the FRS channels and reception for me has been nothing short of fantastic. No static, excellent voice quality and surprising range are all features of this radio set.

I gave my wife one as she drove to the local coffee shop. We had a clear conversation all the way up to the store (about 4 miles). Once she was inside the coffee shop the voice quality diminished, but never cut out completely. I was inside the house at the time.

The battery indicator on each radio will let you know when the radios need to be recharged. In my experience you can get 3 days battery life in standby (the radios go to standby after 3 minutes). If you use the radios a lot and use them to replace a cell phone, you'll get a full day of use without problems. I did note that when the battery indicator comes on you really don't have a lot of time left before you better get the radios back to the recharging cradle.

These radios were at the perfect price point, work as advertised, and are far better in range than the expensive Motorola units I have used. Well done Uniden!

These radios are very good. Ten miles will be rare but possible, more likely 2-4. I used them on a ship & they worked all over especially through the decks-very happy with their performance. However don't get these without the battery pack, I did & used 4 AAAA rechargeable batteries. These didn't last long (4-6 hours) before having to be recharged (the battery pack that comes in the 2CK pack lasted 3 days on a charge) I was amazed at the difference. I went to order the battery pack but found it was almost as expensive as these radios are with batteries so I ended up ordering another radio/battery combo pack.

The grandkids love it for talking to us from their play house in the back yard. We like it when communicating from the fuse box at one end of our ranch style house to the other where we are working on electric switches.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor battery life, February 4, 2007
This review is from: Uniden GMR1038-2CK 10-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
After using these radios two months I can say that battery life is poor.A full charge doesn't hold three hours.Perhaps my batteries didn't come in good condition. I didn't use them on AAA yet... 10 mile range is not true in a normal environment, open sea or desert perhaps.Product works fine while battery last

5.0 out of 5 stars These were a hit with adults and children, January 16, 2007
This review is from: Uniden GMR1038-2CK 10-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
These walkie talkies/two-way radios were a great hit with the adults and children in my family. Two sets were given to my nieces and nephews. We had lots of fun, and they were helpful while hiking, and also traveling in different vehicles.

The radios are wonderful. They work just as described. We use them from vehicle to vehicle on our way and person to person while in place. They're great.

This review is from: Uniden GMR1038-2CK 10-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I bought these, as we live in a large home, and they don't hold a charge even just through the daytime hours. Good sound though, if you don't need to use them all the time.

The unit can only connect for a distance of up to just less than a mile. I bought two pairs of this item and I'm so frustrated that the first time I used and tried them, it couldn't able to connect after a distance of just half a mile.

This is a ripoff.
