Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

With the Uniden 22-Channel 20-Mile 2-Way Radio you can stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the baseball game, or anywhere else within a 20-mile range. This lightweight, palm-sized radio is also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and kid-sitting aid. Each state-of-the-art radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 99 privacy codes per channel to help reduce interference. Another great attribute of this Uniden two-way radio is its hands-free operation, which is made possible by a user selectable Voice Operated Transmitter (VOX) that can be used for automatic voice transmission. Transmission begins when you speak into the optional remote headset for snappy, hands-free communication that is both safe and efficient. The large number of channels and privacy codes give you several communication options that ensure you can almost always talk with your friends and family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. Plus, the channels are easy to find, thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses to active channels while you watch the display. And the channel monitor function listens for weak signals on a given channel with the press of a key. If you're communicating with a group, the GMR1588-2CK is also equipped with an auto-channel change feature that automatically changes everyone in your group to a new channel to avoid confusion and interference.

These two-way radios offer additional privacy and safety features. If you're having a conversation with sensitive matter, these radios offer a voice scramble feature that prevents outside monitoring. Plus, you can also select the "Direct Call" function that lets you call one of the people in your group privately without everyone knowing. And for added safety, these radios receive emergency and weather broadcasts from the NOAA National Weather Service. When in Emergency/Weather mode, the radios monitor the selected emergency/weather channel for alerts, even when you're not actively communicating.

Additional features include a backlit LCD display that is easy to read under any lighting conditions, a keypad lock that prevents your settings from being accidentally changed, and a choice of five different call tones that offer distinctive ring options to easily identify who's calling. You can also operate these radios in silent mode to avoid bothering others, or if you just need a quick volume adjustment, the rotary volume/power control makes it easy to turn the volume up/down and shut the radio off in a snap. The radios are also equipped with a battery strength meter that monitors the status of the batteries so you can always stay in touch, a key beep audio confirmation of each button you press, and a "roger beep" tone to confirm to other users that you're done speaking. The built-in headset jack is for the optional headset mic, which enables hands-free operation. The radios are equipped with dual-location charging units that make it easy to keep your radios charged and ready to go, and they can also be powered by four AAA alkaline batteries (not included). This two-pack unit comes with the manufacturer's one-year limited warranty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best in show?, May 24, 2007
This review is from: Uniden GMR2089-2CK 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I have the 2059 which doesn't have the NOAA weather alert. I also have the midland 700gxt(26mile) radios and will compare them. The unidens have a lot of really nice features and I find they are slightly clearer than the midlands. The uniden's have a battery pack that are AAA size whereas the midlands are AA size-so battery capability is much higher in midland. I get about 7-8 city blocks with one in the house and the other in a car, out in the open air would be better but thats my test so far. The scramble feature on the uniden ONLY works on the low power FRS channels. The feature I find really nice is scan where it quickly runs thru every channel looking for action and pauses when something is found. If your partner is on another channel finding them on the midland would take awhile having to flip thru each channel manually. Hope this helps

I ve used a lot of different brands before including motorola and midland and cheaper version of uniden. These radios are N1 so far. They give nice range about a mile and the half in the city. At The Park you can get few miles pretty easly. A lot of features and the privacy codes which i like in these radios. Also i have a trisquare 300 which i would compare on about the same level. These radios pretty easy to use, nice clear voice and so far i never had any enterferance. For the price you get realy awesome radios. Plus transmitting on FRS channels are FCC FREE !!! That counts too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, June 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Uniden GMR2089-2CK 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
These radios sure beat the old walky-talky toys I had as a child, even much better alternative to hand held CB radios! They are packed with features, and easy to use once you learn the basics of the menu system. However, the instructions are super fine print and difficult to understand. Otherwise they work as expected. I haven't had a chance to test the 20 mile range, but my suspicion is that 20 miles is only "theoretical" and probably will never happen in most situations. They come with a dual base charger, but the radios also have a charger input so you could use them with a cigarette lighter adapter on the road. Overall, these are a really good deal.

Update:
Tested out the range and found nothing near 20 miles. Through lightly wooded area with no geological obstructions I could only get around 1 mile. The page feature works better, but it only seemed to work for around three miles with no possibility of responding with voice, even using boost. Unless you are in the salt flats or outer space there is no way you are going to get 22 miles out of these radios. I still think they are a good deal and would buy them again.
