Best in show?,
By peace warrior "uss constitution" (california) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uniden GMR2089-2CK 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I have the 2059 which doesn't have the NOAA weather alert. I also have the midland 700gxt(26mile) radios and will compare them. The unidens have a lot of really nice features and I find they are slightly clearer than the midlands. The uniden's have a battery pack that are AAA size whereas the midlands are AA size-so battery capability is much higher in midland. I get about 7-8 city blocks with one in the house and the other in a car, out in the open air would be better but thats my test so far. The scramble feature on the uniden ONLY works on the low power FRS channels. The feature I find really nice is scan where it quickly runs thru every channel looking for action and pauses when something is found. If your partner is on another channel finding them on the midland would take awhile having to flip thru each channel manually. Hope this helps

I ve used a lot of different brands before including motorola and midland and cheaper version of uniden. These radios are N1 so far. They give nice range about a mile and the half in the city. At The Park you can get few miles pretty easly. A lot of features and the privacy codes which i like in these radios. Also i have a trisquare 300 which i would compare on about the same level. These radios pretty easy to use, nice clear voice and so far i never had any enterferance. For the price you get realy awesome radios. Plus transmitting on FRS channels are FCC FREE !!! That counts too.

These radios sure beat the old walky-talky toys I had as a child, even much better alternative to hand held CB radios! They are packed with features, and easy to use once you learn the basics of the menu system. However, the instructions are super fine print and difficult to understand. Otherwise they work as expected. I haven't had a chance to test the 20 mile range, but my suspicion is that 20 miles is only "theoretical" and probably will never happen in most situations. They come with a dual base charger, but the radios also have a charger input so you could use them with a cigarette lighter adapter on the road. Overall, these are a really good deal.
Update: Tested out the range and found nothing near 20 miles. Through lightly wooded area with no geological obstructions I could only get around 1 mile. The page feature works better, but it only seemed to work for around three miles with no possibility of responding with voice, even using boost. Unless you are in the salt flats or outer space there is no way you are going to get 22 miles out of these radios. I still think they are a good deal and would buy them again.

We purchased these to communicate between our two vehicles during a recent long-distance move. They worked ok, although the 20-mile claim is bogus. You'd be lucky to be able to pick up the other radio at any distance over a mile. Also, if you're planning on using them in an urban area, be prepared to share the airwaves with a lot of other people. Even in smallish cities like Missoula, MT, we had a hard time finding a clear channel.
The batteries didn't hold their charge as long as we were hoping, either. By hour four of the drive each day we had to turn the radios off for short periods of time in order to ensure that we had some juice left for the tricky sections later on. Kept on at all times with normal use I would estimate you have about three to five hours of charge in the batteries. Never did figure out how to use the NOAA alert thingy. Overall a mediocre product. It worked well for our trip (except for the battery thing), but wouldn't really want to use them for much else.

Good little GMRS Handies,
By Fred Davis "hamhead" (Stittsville, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uniden GMR2089-2CK 20-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I bought these a little over a year ago. Range around the burbs is, of course, no where near the manufacturers outrageous claims (which, BTW, ALL manufacturers grossly exaggerate), but with the "range boost" on the handie (which I believe is simply switching to full output power), the range is respectable and about what I would consider normal for a UHF handie-talkie in the 4 to 5 watt range. There's really no "average" because range depends on a lot of things, not the least of which is location and terrain.
Having been a licenses Amateur Radio Op for going on 33 years now, I've had experience with similar UHF walkie-talkies that we use in the "ham" bands and these Uniden units hold up just as well as the pricier ham handies. A lot of buyers were influenced by the clearly bogus claims made by GMRS handie manufacturers as to range and therefore are understandably upset and disappointed at real-world results. However, these results are about as best as you can expect. I do like the "scramble" option on the FRS channels and the method you have to take to change the channels (no accidental channel changes). I've played around with cheaper bubble-pack GMRS handies, but it just goes to prove, you only get what you pay for. This model is a good bargain IMHO.

This radio set gets the job done for what I needed it for, I mainly use this for MTB and skiing to get contact with the folks I'm with. The 20 mile range is misleading as its only good if there's nothing between you and the other person, trees, cars and inside abuilding can distort the radio's abiliy to receive/transmit. I still use this set (2 yrs) up to this day, had to replace the rechargeable batteries within a year. Not recommended for long range use.

These worked decently, but the effective range was quite a bit lower than stated range. Also, unless you regularly discharge and recharge the batteries with frequent use, they die and need to be replaced.
Ended up giving them to a kid I know as a gift, he'll get more use out of them than I was.

We bought 10 2-way radios to be used during an afterschool program so that all staff members could keep in contact. On campus, the signla is good and they even worked in the park adjacent to the school. Sometimes the sound quality isn't the greatest and we have to repeat what was said. Overall we are happy with the product.
